Kansas group abandons casino plan

Missouri’s casinos clearly don’t like competition. They lobbied hard for voter passage of Proposition A, which caps the number of casino licenses in the state at 13. Now, casinos in western Missouri don’t have to worry about competition directly across the state line, either. Kansas once appeared to be on the way to licensing as many as seven casinos, including two in the Kansas City metro area, but most of those plans have fallen by the wayside. Last week, developers dropped plans for a Hard Rock Hotel and Casino at the Kansas Speedway. With that big-name competitor gone, the Missouri casinos have little to worry about on their western flank. The only remaining Kansas casino being developed is in Dodge City, in the state’s southwest corner.

I am glad to see this news from Kansas. It is a good thing for the Missouri casinos. Without the stupid loss limits and without new competition, the Missouri casinos can hopefully bounce back. That will return more revenues to Missouri rather than having those revenues go to Kansas or Illinois. There is an economic slump now but if we can make our revenues from Missouri casinos rather than have that money go out of state where Missouri people receive no benefit, it is positive news especially in this economy.

Actually some of the facts have been omitted from this story. The Kansas Entertainment group pulled their bid to restructure their construction plans. The Kansas Lottery has re-opened the bid process and has allowed Kansas Entertainment (Hard Rock) to resubmit their plans. It also has allowed Golden Gaming to consider putting in a new bid and also Red Development is considering putting in a new bid as well. So the Kansas City Kansas area, will still get a casino. It is up to the Kansas Lottery to get the dates and all the bids in place. Right now it looks as though all bidding parties will have until April 1 to get their new bids in and the Kansas Lottery will have until June 1 to decide on the bids.

Its always amazing how some some facts get left out to make a bigger story
