St. Louis Fed’s timeline lets you rewind the financial crisis
If you need to know the date that Lehman Brothers or Washington Mutual failed, or if you’re simply trying to figure out how we got into such a mess, the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis has a website for you. Its Financial Crisis Timeline takes you step by step through the events of the past two years, beginning with Freddie Mac’s decision on Feb. 27, 2007, to stop buying subprime mortgages. Each timeline entry takes you to the appropriate press release, SEC filing or other legal document. The site also has links to key financial data and other helpful information, such as the FDIC’s failed bank list and the Treasury’s TARP page.
And, in case any of you cockeyed optimists think the crisis is over, the timeline already has a 2009 template. The New Year will undoubtedly bring plenty of entries, and there’s a good chance the Fed will have to add a 2010 section, too.
