About the research
The Post-Dispatch analysis included five years of traffic stop data which more than 700 law enforcement agencies are required to file with the Missouri Attorney General’s Office. The information includes detailed statistics on numbers of traffic stops, citations and warnings issued by each agency. To create the citation rate per person, the number of citations was compared to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2007 American Community Survey population rates. Square mile measurements of municipalities recorded in the 2000 Census were used to create the ratio of traffic citations per square mile.

Rock Hill is horrible. Whilst driving down Manchester I was going 31 in a 30 and got nabbed. It cannot be a fun job to constantly pull people over for barely breaking the speed limit. They do have nice police cars though. They have the new Hemi Charger’s. I gave them $150 towards the purchase of a new one…..unfortunately.
I say the more tickets, the better…that results in fewer accidents. If these people are breaking the law they should be stopped. I live in one of the so called “speed traps” and feel safer knowing the streets are well patrolled. Keep up the good work!
I’m surprised Ballwin’s isn’t higher. When the construction was going on for almost 2 years on Clayton Road, they seemed to constantly have someone pulled over. Well, except when someone was on my tail for trying to maintain the unreasonable 25 mph speed limit, particularly in the morning hours during rush hour traffic or on the weekends….
What a bunch of rats. I hope Missouri goes through with putting an end to this abuse of the law.
I specifically do not patronize business in Rock Hill because I am afraid of the police. Congratulations on the loss of my business.
Impressive map. Why am I not suprised Charlack is near the top?
Will someone please investigate Bella Villa? Something seems a little odd, especially considering my backyard is as big as their whole city.
Don’t know if it’s still true, but a couple of years ago, it was rumored that Rock Hill was generating more than $250,000/year from traffic stops along Manchester and McKnight. Don’t know how much of that is purely in the name of revenue generation, but I know Officer Ziegler is an equal opportunity kind of guy. He’ll bust the high rollers as well as the soccer moms. Also, and maybe it’s by design, he nails plenty of riff raff wanted on other charges in other municipalities, too. Does this extreme enforcement cut down on accidents related to speeding? I certainly have my doubts.
This reminds me of a little trap muni just outside of Ft Polk, Louisiana. New Llano covered about .8 miles between the Fort and the larger town of Leesville. I was one of the lucky ones who never got a ticket on that stretch of road. I found a backdoor out off base.
Donna S… I suspect that if your home was being robbed by a convicted armed felon while a police officer was writting a speeding ticket down the street for 3mph over the limit, you would have a slightly different opinion. There is widespread police abuse throughout the metro area with regard to traffic tickets and violent crime is exploding at the same time. Wake up!
Why are these smaller municipalities allowed to stay around? They each hold maybe 10 businesses and offer nothing of value other than writing tickets. Matter of fact in Calverton Park the cop sits in a driveway at the bottom of a very steep hill and nabs anybody coming over. The speed limit is set at 20mph (which nobody can realistically do going down a steep hill). Not to mention they get everybody coming out of church!
Police…. hmmmm….. what can I say about them? I feel if you are going to be an officer of the law, you should be in top physical shape, no matter if you are sitting at a desk or walking the streets. I also feel they abuse their right to pull anyone over for anything they want, 10 mph over the limit is reason to pull someone over, anything under is simply an excuse to meet quota and make extra money, it doesn’t save or protect anyone. It only causes the citizen to waste money on getting it fixed, the court system and a lawyer to waste their time having it reduced to littering or a non moving violation. Stop wasting our time and catch real criminals and stay off your dang cellphones, it’s our tax dollars that pay you, so we should have some say on how you do your job!
The real question is why so many of these wide spots in the road operate their own departments unless it is just a source of revenue without raising taxes. A regional force would be more efficient, eliminate much of the abuse, and cut the cost of each of these berghs having thier own police chief and all other supporting staff that does nothing to make the taxpayer safer.
Calverton Park (between Ferguson and Florissant)is one of the absolute worst offenders. They will nail you for doing 36mph on Florissant Rd. It’s a postage stamp of a town, how they merit their own municipality and services is beyond me.
HPD, boarded along hiway 270 and Lindberg, they are bad, but most of the citations writen in Hazelwood are city related! They like to sit on vacant or busy lots like Village Sq. parking lot right @ Dunn and Lynn Taylor next to Block Buster, on Dunn Rd on the church lot just down frm Jack in the box, Apache Trail Mobile home lot, the old State Farm Claims adjustment building, the south bound Lindberg cloverleaf on ramp of 270/Lindberg headed towards NW Plaza, oh and the UAW hall on Dunn Rd headed towards McDonnell Blvd. Now u know b4 u Go thru Hazelwood Like a Hat-Outa-Hell! Interchange 170, the stretch btwn I-70 thru Page is a hot spot, Bel-Ridge, Charlack and the Berkley older cop in the Dark blue squad car, Charlack and their two Chargers, one with HEMI the other not, Bel-Ridge they like to sit on the on ramp to 170 North as well as on either the sides of 170 or on that Ped ovrpass, those are the hot spots.
i don’t understand why people complain about speeding tickets. there could be a cop every 500 feet, but if you drive at or below the speed limit you will NEVER get a ticket.
if you think the speed limit is too slow on a road, contact your local representatives. however, speed limits are designed and set by engineers who analyze many variables to determine the most appropriate speed for the roadway.
finally, to those who like to speed: you save almost no time! let’s say you were going to take 70 from busch stadium to the airport. at 65mph this takes 12 minutes. at 80 mph it takes 10 minutes and 15 seconds. is it worth it? keep in mind that you also will use 20% more gas. is that really worth it for 1 minute and 45 seconds?
I have been a police officer for about 6 years now. I’m not sure if this has anything to do with it or not, but many of the departments that are listed near the top use a lot of part time officers. These departments will hire part timers so they don’t have to pay benefits. They pay them very very little. Probably around $8-12. I was told that the chief of one of these small departments only makes $16 an hour. If your paying a police officer only $10 an hour what quality of officer are you going to attract?
I think it is ridiculous when people pull out the whole “flow of traffic” argument like there is any credible evidence to support this lie.
What the facts do support is that for every 5mph you travel over the posted speed limit you increase your chance of a fatal crash by 20% yet only reduce average travel time by less than a minute.
For those of you that think it is reasonable to drive with the flow of traffic regardless of the posted legal speed limit, at what point would you change your mind? 20mph over? 30mph over?
If you are speeding and crash into someone driving the legal limit it it YOU who were the danger. And don’t blame law abiding drivers for safety issues. That is like blaming a shooting victim for being in the path of a bullet.
