Good quick sushi; Balaban’s back on again
Picked up some fast-food sushi at lunch at Straub’s; it’s now being done there by John Maung Tin, who made what I thought was the best grocery-store sushi in town at Wild Oats. It’s good, but pricey — but then again, the stuff at Wild Oats was always a buck or two more than Schnucks and Dierbergs.
And, according to Sauce’s website, the on-again, off-again Balaban’s sale to the Monarch owners is on again and in fact a done deal.

Joe Bonwich has been the restaurant critic for the Post-Dispatch since 2002 and has covered the local food scene for various publications for more than 25 years. He does his best to maintain his anonymity so that he isn't recognized in restaurants (which is why his picture looks like it does).
I think if Balaban’s wants to succeed, they need to introduce pancakes. Big, giant flapjacks. Hotcakes that will draw people in from as far as Brentwood and Fairmont City. With IHOP quality syrup (heated). You provide that for customers and your doors are not going to close. When was the last time you heard of a place closing that featured good pancakes? Case closed.
