The year of the cupcake
You’re probably aware of both Jilly’s and the Cupcakery, but further west (12613 Olive Boulevard), another long-time sweet shop has entered the cupcake fray. Pastries of Denmark has been operating a cupcake bar for several weeks now, selling ‘em for $3.25 apiece or $36 a dozen.
If you’d like your kids to make ‘em for you, L’Ecole Culinaire is running a cupcakes-for-kids seminar next week as part of its Kitchens With A Mission teaching/fundraising program. (For the record, I don’t really get the whole cupcake fad, but then again, I also don’t really get the whole blog thing, either.) If you’re a big cupcake fan, please chime in as to why you like them and where you get yours (or how you make your own).

Joe Bonwich has been the restaurant critic for the Post-Dispatch since 2002 and has covered the local food scene for various publications for more than 25 years. He does his best to maintain his anonymity so that he isn't recognized in restaurants (which is why his picture looks like it does).
I thought this place sounded great for lunch, so I tried it one afternoon. I will not return to this location because it was not as clean as most places I frequent. I worked in restaurants through college, and I know how things are behind the scenes. But, in the large glass case of deserts on display for customers to choose from, there were about 10 flies trapped in and landing on all of deserts. I was so grossed out by this that I will not be returning. There were even pastries that have excessive sticky fruit gel on top with flies stuck to them!
