Big time congratulations to Lisa Schwarz and her Charlotte’s Rib team for taking third place in the “Chef’s Choice” competition at last weekend’s Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbecue in Lynchburg, Tenn. The team won for a smoked beef tenderloin served with Jack Daniel’s-sauced shrimp in a branch of the competition where the teams can pick their own entry.

“It was really fun and very exciting,” said Schwarz after getting home. “We’ll probably add the tenderloin to our menu either for a holiday special or maybe as a once-a-month special.” Schwarz added that the team is now bitten by the competitive-barbecue bug and is already looking for places to compete next year.

Missouri was also represented in the winners by Bubba & Jeff’s BBQ of Lee’s Summit, which took first place in beef brisket, eighth place in desserts and ninth place in the overall competition. Charlotte’s Rib is at 15467 Clayton Road in Ballwin.

Great photo caption. And I’m assuming Pappy’s didn’t compete in this?

Congratulations to the Schwarz family! My family had been patrons there for nearly twenty years! Bravo to great BBQ! Look forward to tasting that Tenderloin!

supersleuth,
You are correct Pappy’s was not involved. Right now they are not competing. They are looking at venturing out next May, I believe.

The Jack is one the most exclusive BBQ contests out there. Here is a paragraph from their website:
“In order to qualify, domestic teams must have won a state championship with 25 teams entered or a competition with more than 50 teams competing in the categories of Pork Ribs, Pork Butts, Chicken and Beef Brisket. The final competitors are then selected during a blind drawing of all eligible teams in early September. The 2007 Jack Daniel’s world grand champion and the current season’s Memphis in May, American Royal Open and Houston World’s Championship Bar-B-Que grand champions receive automatic invitations.”

There is roughly 42 state championship BBQ contests in Missouri. Only one of those teams is selected in the blind draw. For this year it was Charlotte’s Rib. The other Missouri team Bubba and Jeff’s won an automatic entry by winning the American Royal.
