Breaking news: Wine Merchant to close Creve Coeur store
P-D Restaurant Critic and Food Writer
John Nash’s weekly e-mail updates from the Wine Merchant Ltd. are usually notes on interesting classes, wine and cheese specials and other trifles, but this week’s contains a blockbuster: The company has chosen not to renew its expiring lease at the Creve Coeur location, 12669 Olive Boulevard. A clearance sale is in progress this week in Creve Coeur, with all operations consolidating to the Clayton store at 20 S. Hanley. (Those with long memories might recall that there was once a third Wine Merchant just past the corner of Clayton and Clarkson roads in West County.)

Joe Bonwich has been the restaurant critic for the Post-Dispatch since 2002 and has covered the local food scene for various publications for more than 25 years. He does his best to maintain his anonymity so that he isn't recognized in restaurants (which is why his picture looks like it does).
NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
Aw man! That is a real shame. I don’t know if I’ll drive all the way to Clayton to patronize the HQ store.
Although I never understood the paucity of hours at the Creve Coeur store. There are Bankers who say, “Man, Wine Merchant is open darn few hours in a day.” A retail store that closes at 7? Okay…
Best of luck with all your other stores, guys.
That’s too bad. We shop there a lot. I will miss you. Clayton seems so far away, but maybe I can consolidate trips, and visit that store. I have an idea for the space — let’s put in another bank. Creve Coeur seems flush with them already. What’s another one?
It is always sad to see local stores close, but I have not been there in awhile. I usually shop at Provisions just a few miles away, their prices are much better. Clayton is too far away.
Those in West County can always go to 141 Liquors in the Woods Mill Center! Check ‘em out!
Crap - recession sucks. This was a nice store & right on my way home. Hopefully someone will fill the void with another real wine store in the same area.
Hints of unctuous silky overtones of overblown self aggrandizement on the part of John Nash aka Robert Parker Wannabe.
He scared too many entry level people away with his “wisdom”, Merch rules, tasting notes, etc.
Yes, good luck with the other store…
Don’t People Know drinking is a sin we should be thanking God for this closing. Look in to AA and the Bible
Whatever Jesus’ first miracle was to turn water into wine!
If that wine was around today it would be at the wine merchant at creve coeur!
Seriously, You cant close! We need nice wine in our neighborhood! If they stay, I promise to shop there at least once a week from now on! This location is WAY better than the hanley road one anyway! Comeon
