Breaking news: St. Louis chef Gerard Craft nominated for James Beard Award

The accolades just keep pouring in for Gerard Craft of Niche restaurant: A few moments ago at Rick Bayless’ Frontera Grill in Chicago, finalists were announced for this year’s James Beard Awards, and Craft is nominated for Best Chef Midwest. His competition is Isaac Becker, 112 Eatery, Minneapolis;
Colby Garrelts, Bluestem, Kansas City; Tim McKee, La Belle Vie, Minneapolis; and Alexander Roberts, Restaurant Alma, Minneapolis. Winners will be announced in New York in May.

Joe Bonwich has been the restaurant critic for the Post-Dispatch since 2002 and has covered the local food scene for various publications for more than 25 years. He does his best to maintain his anonymity so that he isn't recognized in restaurants (which is why his picture looks like it does).
Bravo TV is now casting for Season 6 of Top Chef. Go for it, Gerard!
What’s up with Minneapolis? And no Chicago?
The “Best Chef” category has Chicago in a different geographic region.
CONGRATS GERALD! YOU DESERVE THIS HONOR HANDS DOWN.
He already is a Top Chef. He doesn’t need Bravo.
This is surprising b/c in my 2 visits, the first of which was right after St. Louis magazine gave it high accoloades, the food was just ok and service was below par. Maybe I just went on an off night both times.
Yea, Gerard! Last summer, you made a little beet ravioli in an herb milk. Sounds kind of crazy, I know. Tasted like heaven on a plate. That dish alone should get you the award.
Niche is my FAVORITE restaurant ever!!! Love everything there!! Congrats!!!
Hi! I’m from Chicago, well Cleveland actually, and I love Niche!!!!! I would eat there every day if I could!!! Double Congratulations and a big HIGH FIVE!!!!
Mr. Craft is by far the BEST chef around! Congratulations on the nomination and good luck and best wishes on the final competition!
Niche is my favorite restaurant. My wife and I love it. I hope Gerard doesn’t leave for NY or Vegas someday, but I have a funny feeling…
Craft is a passionate and inspired chef who deserves this and all the other accolades he’s been awarded.
