3690 Forest Park under construction: New brewpub for Midtown?
Plans were announced several years ago for renovation of the old Falstaff brewery complex at Spring and Forest Park in Midtown, but recently, it looks like one part of the project — a proposed pub and grill, and perhaps even a “brewpub,” according to some rumors — is moving forward, with workmen on site. (Another rumor says that the pub will have a firehouse theme.)
As of 2006, the complex was owned by Robert Hermann Holton, a descendant of the Busch family. The city assessor’s office still shows Holton as the owner. It dates as a brewery to 1909 and served as a Falstaff facility from 1922 until the last beer was brewed there in 1959. (There’s a nice Falstaff stained glass above the door at 3690.) The complex is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Big Brothers Big Sisters formerly occupied the space at 3690. Warehouses at or near the facility have been used for more than a century as a storage facility for the Veiled Prophet organization.

Joe Bonwich has been the restaurant critic for the Post-Dispatch since 2002 and has covered the local food scene for various publications for more than 25 years. He does his best to maintain his anonymity so that he isn't recognized in restaurants (which is why his picture looks like it does).
Don’t get me wrong,I’m really happy they are redoing the old Falstaff brewery, but it seems like they are way too many of these types of projects going on.With the low wage jobs they provide, and the tax abatements they get, there probally little or no tax revenue generated>What we need to turn things around is better paying tech, manufacturing, distribution jobs etc….
Steve, until the Federal and state government allows people to pay children 10 cents a day, manufacturing jobs will not appear here. And as long as India pays tech people a few bucks a day, tech jobs will not appear here, either. I don’t think anyone is suggesting this brew pub is going to turn things around. It’s just a memo.
