Fitz’s Root Beer makes Bon Appétit magazine
Locally produced Fitz’s Root Beer is one of six “refreshing examples” of “old-fashioned root beer” mentioned in the September issue of Bon Appétit.
Fitz’s appears to have gone a bit hyperbolic with the news, however. A press release says that “The magazine named Fitz’s one of the top six root beers in the country.” You can read the web link to see if you agree with that; my interpretation is that the mag simply said that Fitz’s is a great root beer.
The other five, for the record, are Faygo Original, Jackson Hole Soda Co. Buckin’, Olde Rhode Island Molasses, Sioux City and Zuberfizz. Aside from the Olde Rhode Island, I think they’re all available in St. Louis; two of the best sources are Straub’s stores and Soda Jerks at the St. Louis Mills.

Joe Bonwich has been the restaurant critic for the Post-Dispatch since 2002 and has covered the local food scene for various publications for more than 25 years. He does his best to maintain his anonymity so that he isn't recognized in restaurants (which is why his picture looks like it does).
Awesome
I think Fitz’s is the best root beer in the world. It is made with pure cane sugar and all natural ingredients. Plus it is a hometown legend. Everyone who drinks it likes it. It is much better than those big industry root beers that are mass produced.
How about the root beer shake at Fitz’s? It is the best shake in the world and doesn’t have drop of milk in it.
Fitz’s root beer is nothing special and their service in their restaurant is not so good.
Our family loves root beer and we recently ran a blind test to find our favorite rootbeer. Fitz’s came out on top of our first round — it simply clobbered a lot of great root beers.
Round two will include our previous favorite (Henry Weinhard’s) and a couple that we couldn’t find locally (IBC, Hires, and Stewart’s) — time will tell if it will stay on top.
