Vom Fass — olive oil, vinegar, Scotch sampling — coming to Maplewood
There’s a sign up at 7314 Manchester in Maplewood indicating that the space will soon house Vom Fass, an unusual retailer that started in Germany in about 1995 and is now in more than a dozen countries. The only other U.S. location thus far appears to be in Madison, Wisconsin — like the Manchester location, just a few doors down from a Penzeys.
Vom Fass employs an unusual sales technique of allowing sampling of its olive and other oils, vinegars and hard liquor, including Scotch, directly “from the cask” (which is what “vom fass” means in German). It accommodates liquor laws in Wisconsin by holding a bar license; it’ll be interesting to see if it can pull that off here. The space was bare as of the weekend, so I’m guessing an after-the-first-of-the-year opening.

Joe Bonwich has been the restaurant critic for the Post-Dispatch since 2002 and has covered the local food scene for various publications for more than 25 years. He does his best to maintain his anonymity so that he isn't recognized in restaurants (which is why his picture looks like it does).
stopped by and talked to the people inside Vom Fass Sat. prior to dining at Los Palmas, they said Dec 1 openning….guess they’d have to push for a holiday openning. Penzey’s staff said they get requests for EVO all the time.
I am so there. This sounds fan-freakin-tastic…
I’ve been to one of these stores in Germany, we are lucky there will be one here!
We thank all those who Looked, Tasted and Enjoyed a small sampling of Vom Fass products at Hoffman LaChance Contemporary during the Maplewood Gallery Walk Friday night. It was a wonderful evening, shared with so many lovely people who took the time to visit while enjoying the tastings.
Vom Fass Maplewood was initially scheduled to open Dec. 1, however, mother nature created a different plan. All fixtures and products are coming from Germany on a ship which can not dock at port due to flood waters in Norfolk, VA. It has pushed back an opening date to December 7th or 8th, dependent on weather conditions.
The Maplewood Vom Fass will be participating in the Maplewood Christmas Tree Walk, December 4th and will have a few gift boxes available for sale.
We look forward to sharing the Vom Fass experience with Saint Louis.
I spoke with the Vom Fass owner and manager Friday evening. They were eager answered all the questions we had about the oils and vinegars and the Imported Scotch and spirits that they will have in the store, the line of bottles which can be refilled and the aging process of balsamic vinegar.
The oils and vinegars are sold from the cask, the spirits can be tasted (they have a tasting license)and are sold in bottles, packaged and shipped from a distillery in WI who receives the imported spirits. The oils and vinegars we sampled were luscious, can’t wait for Vom Fass to open.
