Sticky ways to say ‘I love you.’

ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

In this week’s Dirty Laundry column, I write about the notion of giving plastic surgery to a loved one for Valentine’s Day. Decidedly unromantic, I say.

I actually love this Hallmark holiday more for the sticky, homemade cards I get from my little ones than the commercialized stuff we’re told to expect from our significant others. Which Valentines warm your heart the most? Do you get into the card exchange at your kid’s school? And what’s up with the candy-ladened goody bags they bring home?

I like a day devoted to expressing love for those special folks in our lives. I just like having a reason to be sweet and mooney-eyed with my husband, and getting extra hugs and kisses from the offspring.

This is the 2nd year of doing the card exchange (at preschool). I enjoy taking my son to pick out cards, counting up how many packs we need, then teaching him patience to sit down and sign everyone (teacher’s orders ;) ).
NOW, I am the square mom. When there is a class party, you bet I’m the one bringing sugar free candies, jello, desserts, etc. I couldn’t find any suitable treats this year, so our cards will be accompanied by Transformer-themed pencils.
I did like the variety bags of tiny Play-doh that I saw at Target, but, my son really had his heart set on those pencils once he saw them. ;)

This is my son’s first year in preschool. We got cards, pencils, and play-doh to give out in little bags because his school prohibits giving out candy. We are still working on filling out the cards, a few at a time. I couldn’t resist the play-doh though, they are so cute and something they can actually play with.

You guys are so good…The goody bags we made have stickers, notepads, pencil and LOTS of candy.

Miniature bottles of bubble soap, usually found in the party favor aisle, are inexpensive and kids love them. Little boxes of raisins can be given in place of candy.
