Standing by your cheating spouse

ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

One of the most uncomfortable things to watch in this prostitution scandalĀ  taking down NY Gov. Eliot Spitzer has been his grim-faced wife standing by his side.

It reminds me how sorry I felt for Sen. Larry Craig’s wife when he got caught with his “wide stance” in a public restroom.

Is this the price political wives have to pay? Why would it be so bad if they just let their husbands take the heat by themselves?

I wondered the same thing. Why would you submit yourself to that kind of humiliation? Certainly these wives have a choice.

During both of Spitzer’s press conferences last week, the focus (for me) was also on Silda Spitzer - very sad to watch.

All I can gather is that Mrs. Spitzer was willing to be there to show a ’stand by your man’ stance - and there’s nothing wrong with that. Eliot Spitzer is her husband; she promised to love him ‘for better or for worse’ - period.

Personally, I admire her willingness to show her support in spite of utterly humiliating circumstances. It’s now Spitzer’s turn to repent, change his ways - and be a person worthy of her love and support. He has apologized to his family and fellow New Yorkers. Hopefully, they’ll allow him to mend his relationships with his family and loved ones. I pray that his family will stay together and toughen this out. Ironically, that could end up being Spitzer’s greatest accomplishment; greater than anything he could have accomplished as governor.

By all accounts, Spitzer seemed to be a very prideful individual. This ‘castor oil of humility’ experience could be what he needed in order to change. All of us need to ‘die daily’ from our own sin and pride, so we can avoid the hellish experiences that the Spitzer family is going through.
