An excellent higher ed proposal

ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

If Missouri’s Attorney General Jay Nixon, who is running for governor, is sincere about his plan to offer free community college, it’s one of the best campaign promises I’ve heard in awhile.

You can read the details here.

While I think it’s an excellent idea, I am doubtful that a proposal like would pass the Legislature if he were elected. Good idea or is Nixon making false promises?

Will this apply to students in parochial and/or private schools as well? Unlike now since the A+ program is only offered to public school students.

It is sad that we have to give everything to people these days. There is nothing too hard about going to a community college for a couple years while saving up to transfer. I know. I am doing it now.

An individual who saves money, spends wisely, and works hard can make a decent amount of money to pay for 2-3 years at a state college with little debt.

This plan is unnecessary. An obvious political move for Nixon before the campaign.

Outstanding proposal! I’ve seen up close the success of the A+ program through our Hoenny Center research. (”Hoenny” rhymes with “penny.”) Especially important is the 50-hour tutoring component. High school students who tutor peers or work after school to help younger students not surprisingly gain important learning and social benefits, as well as those they help. Tutors learn more deeply and add value to their learning in any field. Although peer teaching is well supported by anecdotal evidence, we also find much reinforcement from quantitative and qualitative research.

No way this will be “free”. Taxes will have to be raised to pay for this. Community college tuition is cheap, Mr. Nixon would be better off trying to help some of the students attending universities tackle their tuition bills.
