Will the show go on?

ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

Heartbreak in St. Charles County… A dance studio has reportedly unexpectedly shutdown, and a bunch of little girls with expensive recital outfits are left without a show.

Their parents are trying to find a way to give them their big moment, anyway. As a former ballet mom, I know kids take these recitals seriously, but it was always the moms who seemed to take them much more seriously than their daughters.

I stopped taking my daughter when I had to spend $100 on recital costumes and do her hair and make-upĀ  when she was three years old. Are dance moms taking the fun out of ballet lessons?

I am so sorry to hear that this has happened. As a dance teacher, who does not have a studio at this time, because I just moved here, I would love to help you out! Please let me know if I can step in as a teacher to this girls and get some fundraisers going to make up for some of the lost money. I know dance is an important thing in these girls lives, and it is expensive for the parents. I would love to help you in anyway that I can. Please let me know what I can do for you!

I think that dance/stage moms are always going to be part of the dance world and yes, sometimes their behavior can take the fun out of dance. That’s just part of the entertainment industry.

However, in response to “I stopped taking my daughter when I had to spend $100 on recital costume and do her hair and make-up when she was three years old.” I am so sick of hearing people say things like this. You NEVER heard people complain about costumes, hair and make-up when I was a student. What did you expect? That is part of being in the dance world. You can’t expect to be allowed to participate in soccer playoffs without the proper gear, correct? Costumes, make-up, etc are part of the “gear” that goes along with being a dancer in most studios…..even if the dancer is three years old.

Not to mention, there are plenty of fantastic studios in the St Louis area that don’t ask you to pay for costumes and they also don’t have recitals, therefore….no hair and make-up required. Parents need to do their research and ask questions before signing their child up for dance classes to make sure they agree with that studio’s mission and policies. I would even try checking with the Better Business Bureau to find out if there have been any complaints. Ask other people that have children that dance how they like their current dance school. If you don’t do the leg work from the get go to make sure that particular studio is right for you and your family then you can only blame yourself for being shocked by that studio’s requirements.

My studio advises parents at the time of registration of the approximate costumes costs for the year (which can vary greatly depending on how many numbers the child is in). Also, parents receive and sign policy sheets at the time of registration that lists all of the other expectations/requirements. I agree that costumes are expensive (and they keep climbing like everything else these days). I’m sure there are some, but I personally don’t know of any studios that profit from the costume orders. I know that at my studio, we can only add enough to cover shipping costs as the wholesale costs are already so high.

There is a studio for everyone out there, but you have to do your research before you sign up.

To the parents of Dance 4 Life, We are currently working with several of your instructors and have rescheduled many of your classes at our dance studio off Mid RIvers Mall Drive. We are activley trying to contact everyone and we have secured a date and a location for your recital.
Please call our office at 636-970-3203 or 636-279-2790 for more information. Thank you Kathy Martinez Owner - St. Peters Academy of Dance

I have three children who dance at St. Peters Academy of Dance — one girl, two boys. Their levels of achievement are varied but I just love to watch them up on stage. I marvel at the things they can do and the self assurance that they have developed from dancing.

I would encourage anyone looking for a new dance studio to contact Kathy Martinez the owner of St. Peters Academy of Dance. We’ve been with the studio for 13 years now and my kids consider it their home away from home. Kathy makes every effort to keep the price of costumes reasonable and more than that…she makes sure that the costumes are age appropriate and that the dances are more than the bump and grind gyrations that I’ve seen from several other studios.

If your only goal is to win and to win big, then maybe it’s not the studio for you. Don’t get me wrong, our kids like to win and they do win. We’ve got some great dancers at the studio, but the emphasis is on doing your best and having fun.

We are in the front corner of the same building where Dance 4 Life is located. I look forward to hearing from you. My daughter is 4 years old and dances at Dance4Life. This is the first I have heard of this closing. I’m just appauled! She loves her dance class so much, and we already spent money on the dance recital tickets and her costume. I have no idea how to go about getting this money back. I am just susprised that the closing couldn’t just wait another month to let these girls dance. I can’t imagine having to tell her that she can’t dance anymore. She was so proud showing me her little routine, and I was looking so forward to seeing it. Especially since we are a bit strapped financially, but I danced growing up, and wanted her to get to dance as well, and even though the tuition went up this year and was hard for us to come up with, I continued to pay it for her. A little warning would’ve been nice. If any Dance4Life Mom reads this, please don’t forget about the little ones’ class if you are able to go on with a recital. They may not compete but they have worked hard this year too. i have contacted St. Peters Academy of Dance to ask if her class will be resuming in any way. is there a way to get the lists of all the students so that none are left out?

As a local Dance Studio Owner and Instructor, I can only imagine what the parents and dancers must be going through. For most girls involved in dancing that’s usually the only activity taken up and it becomes your life. Having worked so hard all year and that be taken away from you is really upsetting. I am located in WingHaven about 15-20 mins. from Dance 4 Life and already have a few dancers joining my studio. I am offering free tuition for 1 month to say “Thank you” for giving us a try after all they have been through. We offer smaller class sizes which in turn students receive individual attention. We only have 4 weeks left before recital but I am also allowing the students to come and dance during the time slots I have available because they are missing something that they love to do. I am willing to work with those that join to try and place them into our dance recital taking place Sat. May 17th at a local elementary school. Our recital is very low key this year because we just opened in October 2007, and the girls coming in wouldn’t feel out of place b/c we didn’t order costumes this year and are just wearing accessories purchased by me and matching leotards and tights. Please let me know if there is any way we can help you out.

I am a teacher at Steppin’ Up Dance Productions located on Hwy K, essentially across from Target. The owner of the studio Pattie King has already conferred with the teachers at our studio and we would all like to help. Please contact Pattie at 314-608-5444 or 636-474-0071 to make arrangements for the following:

We are prepared to provide studio rehearsal space for the former students of Dance4Life. We are also offering to provide expert instruction to those students during those rehearsals to continue to prepare them for competition and recital. In addition, we would be happy to sponsor and accompany them to competition. And finally, we can provide them with a recital so that they may showcase what they have worked so hard for all year long.

We can’t imagine turning any of our students away or leaving them without an outlet to dance. Dancing is a passion for most of our students, as we are sure it is for the former students of Dance4Life. To deny them the opportunity to share their accomplishments with those that love and support them at the end of the year is unthinkable. So, we are not going to let that happen. We won’t miss a beat. After all, the show must go on.

I am so sorry to hear what has happened, as a teacher at Dance Connection PAC we are pulling together and if we can do anything to make a recital for your children just give us a call, we can find music and we have tons of costumes that may work. If you can pull together some of the kids from the same classes we can rehearse them and get them ready for recital, we do not want dance to be a bad experience for them. Just call we will try to help you out.

To anyone else in the Dance 4 Life Thursday 5-6pm class for 3-5 year olds:

My 5 year old daughter was upset, confused, and crying to find out about her dance class tonight when we pulled up to the building. I have not been contacted by anyone from Dance 4 Life yet. I have contacted St. Peters Academy of Dance and would like to know what anyone else is hearing about this specific class and where to go. My daughter really wants to be with her same class and have the recital. I would also like to know what anyone else plans to do about lost tuition, ticket and costume money. I am angry and upset about this situation, as I’m sure everyone else is.

I can be contacted at 314-600-4206 if anyone from Dance 4 Life or another parent from this class has information.

Thanks.

My name is Jessica and my daughter, Lexi, was also in the 3-5 year old class on Thursday from 5-6. We are also very disappointed with the whole situation. I received a letter from St. Peters Academy of Dance saying that they could accomodate the entire class but hadn’t called them yet. I was hoping we could get her back into a class with the same girls & have a recital. She was so looking forward to performing on the big stage. What did SPAD say about the class? I was going to call tomorrow and see if any other parents had called about it. I wonder if there is any way to get ahold of all of the parents. Thanks.

Are the studios responding doing so in order to receive free advertising or do they have a genuine concern for those affected by this situation.

Food for thought for all parents reading this.

It sounds to me like many studios are really looking at the prospect of putting a lot of money in their own pockets in the long run. Especially the studio that stated that the classes were resuming at their facility. That’s one that I definitely would not trust. Hopefully you can pull your show together with the girls that were at Dance 4 Life without having to make a hasty decision as to what studio to go to next. I understand that costumes will be donated this weekend at Union Station during the Nat’l Dance Week demo. Try to get your show together without the assistance of an overly eager to help out studio owner. Good luck!

We are not trying to get free advertisement, I am a concerned parent as well as in the same business as you, and after talking to some of your students parents that have came in and they said you were trying everything you could to make this all work out and I told them to have you contact me if I could help in anyway. Then I read your blog, that you are working on this and trying to make everything right. I am happy you have stepped forward to help your dancers. Hats off to you, just let me know if I can be of any help.

Jessica- Kiley was heartbroken when I told her about not being able to dance. And she said “I won’t be able to see Lexi anymore….” they have become pretty good buddies. Did Kristie get a hold of you? She called me last night. I hope that we can all keep the girls together so they can still dance and see each other.

Linette - Lexi felt the same way. The first thing she said when I told her was “am I ever going to get to see Kiley again?”. It just about broke my heart. I have not talked to Kristie but I did just talk to Lisa G (from above) and she talked to Kristie and is going to send me the info. Hopefully we can make this work…that would be so great!

How sad for all these kids. I have read all the postings and I believe every studio owner is really just trying to help. Every one seems to be willing to take time out of their day to help these families. Yes each would love to show these girls what their studio has to offer but the true dancers will stay where they are loved. Free advertising is not what I see. I believe all intrest is in letting these kids finish out their year. Good luck to everyone. We love our studio. Stacy Parker

I just found out about this situation late last night, and my heart went out to the families affected by this unfortunate situation. I am a studio owner and sent an email of the article to one of my staff suggesting we offer some studio time or whatever we could do to help, since our classrooms are not in use everyday. She sent me this blog, and I am impressed with the outpouring of concern and willingness in the dance community here in St. Charles to help out in a rough situation. It’s nice to see that! We are still open if anyone needs any help, although you may have it covered. :) You can call me at 636-978-3321 if anything else is needed. Thanks and blessings to you! Michelle Revelle

It sounds to me as if the “out of area dance teacher” does not understand the closeness of the dance community in St. Louis/St Charles. Of course there are those in it just for the $$$, but most of us that teach do it because we love the art and (most of all the kids). I don’t know too many of us that can brag about being a wealthy Dance Teacher here in the Mid-West.
Good luck to all of the parents - always do what is best for your child. There are many studios to choose from, ask a lot of questions and make sure you get the right fit.

I want all of the Dance 4 Life parents to be aware.,. Kathy Martinez for St. Peters Academy of Dance has allowed our former owner’s daughter to dance at her studio (which we are all paying for) with no problem and a lot of our parents have to see Pamela Robinson when they drop their kids off. SPAD also was given a file of all of our names and addresses along with our childrens names, (that is why we all keep recieving literature from them) from our beloved former owner. She leaves all of our daughters out in the cold, no dance or recital, for some no competition, but hers gets to go on with no problem. NOT FAIR!!!!

4:21 pm April 26th, 2008

i’ve read all of these comments that parents have posted about how upset their daughters are and how much money they have lost because of this whole fiasco. just so everyone knows i personally know the owner, her daughter, the people who complained to the paper about this, and probably half of your daughters. as for the students who dont have class anymore. THIS ISN’T THE END!!! for god’s sake just because one studio closes doesn’t mean dance is diminished from the world, go find a new studio-and if you’re to afraid to take class with new people, you’re not going to do too well if you grow up with that attitude. dancing with a variety of people gives you more experience & you have the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends. all i wanted to do was dance, and yea, i was upset to hear about my studio closing-but life goes on, i started taking classes at SPAD and i have already made tons of nice people and made a few good friends. and for all of you parents who are upset about pam & teighlor being there, you will hardly see either of them-the classes are all by age and if your child is under 14 or 15 then they will never see teighlor-even though she didnt do anything wrong. and pam has agreed to stay out of the studio so that no one gets upset. and you shouldnt be so upset anyway, pam closed the studio so suddenly because the stress and debt was getting worse everyday. do you not remember that she had gotten in a car accident the day before she closed Dance4Life?! that just made it worse. fyi, the studio might not have even closed if the “beloved dance director” hadnt sent you all the financial information to make you start complaining. you wouldnt have known what the financial trouble was, and you wouldve been fine and would be seeing your child dance in june. all of you parents are just upset because you have lost money, i was upset at first, i lost $500, but then i found out that because the director froze all of the dance4life accounts, pam lost half of a million dollars-she wouldve been able to pay you all back and fix her financial problem if those accounts hadnt been frozen. you’ve all only heard one side of the story. some of you who think pam owes you money need to think again because she was nice enough to help some of the parents who were having financial trouple-and they repay her by now making her bankruptcy worse, you need to stop thinking just about yourself: your children met some of their best friends at the studio and nothing will ever change that-you should at least thank pam for that, and think about what shes going through now- no, shes not content with her life, she is upset to not see anyone anymore, she has no money now, and she made that studio for teighlor, it was teighlor’s baby and her way of being social-all she does is dance, and that has pretty much all been taken from her

please just do everyone a favor and stop making this worse, yes thats what you’re doing, making it worse by complaining and doing anything you can to get her back. your children have long lives ahead of them-more dances they’ll learn, and more performances, a few lost dances in one or two recitals and competitions will not ruin their lives-just get them back on their feet and in a new studio, that would be the thing that makes everything better

— anonymous

Blaming a child is not going to get your money back. It is NOT the child’s vault!!!! If I owed YOU money it would not be my child’s vault. Take your anger out on the adult who is in charge and leave the child out of it. If the child dances and the mom is not allowed, then you won’t have to see or talk to her.
Good luck with your endeavors.

To the two comments by anonymous…Are your really that foolish as to believe that a director of the studio who’s name has been taken off of everything financial could have the power to “Freeze” any type of money accounts. Lawyers have given us all the documents that totally dispute that. Every teacher now says the were mislead by Pam, all of us were too. When asked by every parent there if she was closing or having financial problems, her response was ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! Now there were a lot of us willing to give her the money she needed to help, so the studio could at least stay open until recital. But she said she wasn’t having problems. To the other issue of her stress, it was brought on by herself because she didn’t know how to manage her money. Not our fault, however she lied to our faces and continued to take our money when she already was contacted by the IRS. That is dishonest and evil to our children. We can all get over this and most of us have. My daughter is 15 and she danced with Teighlor, was her friend and I agree that this is not her fault. However, Pam let Teighlor run that studio, which she shouldn’t have, and allowed Teighlor to bad mouth Kristy to all of the students. That’s unprofessional on her part. My daughter was unaware of the “Drama” until Teighlor would come to class and broadcast it. So lets put the blame where it belongs,,,with Pam. She needs to take responsibility and at least apologize to our daughters and us. Our kids have all moved on, and will be better in the long run, but don’t you dare say that we the customers caused the studio to close. We paid her for a service, she should have provided, or been honest. Business don’t close because of petty gossip, that is obsurd, it closed because she didn’t know how to run a business. WAKE UP. Good luck to everyone out there who went through this and of course our daughters will still dance, we all set better examples for our girls.

Wow this is all so sad… Everything and for everyone and even these blogs…

Don’t be fooled, be a smart consumer… Many have offered help not posted publically here, though most may not know who or how to contact to offer help so I believe some posts are in good faith…

The St. Louis/St. Charles dance community is NOT a close dance community, it is very competitive, I do believe it is improving but again don’t be fooled… However, I do believe people generally want to help.

There just needs to be more focus on how to make lemonade out of these lemons…

To the anonymous poster. I am a parent of a 4 year old at the studio. We are not even in all the drama of the competition team families, nor have we invested quite as much money as they have. We simply pay our monthly tuition, paid for a costume and bought tickets for a recital. Now if there were this many problems, pam simply should’ve told people about it earlier, so that we would not be out money right now. We are not as financially free as others. It is very hard for us to come up with our daughter’s dance expenses. I do it simply because I danced as a young girl, and my daughter LOVES it. So, I am upset that I am out over $100 right now. it may not seem like a lot, but I don’t care, you pay for something, and you get it. If someone deliberately takes money from you knowing they can not follow through, that is a crime in my eyes. I don’t know Pam personally, just from brief meetings in the studio. But I’m sorry, I am not going to just forget about my money.

Way to go Linette!!! I agree 100% with you. We are out about $700.00 and I am just supposed to be okay with that. We had to work hard for our money, and we don’t just have it laying around for people to steal. I am sure the people with the negative comments are the ones who created this mess. Please go to the police dept. and file a report, at least we don’t have to be silent about all of this. We all will move on, and hopefully others will go to jail where they belong!!

I applaud all of the parents who are willing to pull together to make their children’s recital happen. Your children will always remember this one.

I strongly encourage all of you to do everything that can possibly be done to bring about justice.

Anyone who believes that this situation is the result of dance parent actions, or that Pam is not responsible for any other reason — accidental or otherwise, is fooling themselves. This situation is the result of her deliberate actions. She is a thief, a con artist.

Her fraud cost me tens of thousands of dollars, after which I could not afford to persue her legally. She has known exactly what she has done all along, and has done these things for her own benefit.

Anyone who has tried to force her to “follow the rules” has been banished from her “realm.” Every decision is her way or the highway.

Please follow through and do everything you can to bring about justice. If she’s not forced to stop, she will only scam someone else.

Holy Crap…..Can everyone just please stop!!! You got your recital and your costumes that you ordered are coming in i dont care if you believe it or not i have proof some of them are in my garage waiting to be sent out. What is your deal????? If my mom had intentionally taken your money why would she have bothered making tickets, recital programs or even paying to SCCC to have the recital??? Hmmmm idk??? This is a bunch of bull. Who was at the studio 7 days a week rain or shine???. My mom was nothing but nice to you and your children she never once was mean. So if she really was a “con artist” why would she have even bothered to listen to you complain or make suggestions or even be nice to you? and people have the nerve to say stuff about me??? Really?? When teachers couldnt come in last minute who subbed classes? and iI never once got a thank you from some of you parents I did it because i loved the studio with all of my heart. If i didnt i wouldnt have cared so much, and you cant tell me that my mom and I did nothing. I sacraficed a lot to keep that studio going. You dont know how much it kills me to dance at another studio…all you people think about is just yourself. What do you think your putting me through day after day??? my mom and I worked our butts off at the studio….and I guess you just dont see that huh??? You need to take a deep breath step back and look at the whole situation from begining to end…not end to begining. Tell me what you see/think then.

Teighlor, it is sad that you have to dance somewhere else, but so do we. Your mother was asked if she was closing and lied, continued to take money and that is not nice, it hurt us all. But you are not to blame, and we don’t blame you, but you always talked about Kristy, and all of the other stuff going on to us so of course we went home and told our parents. We don’t blame you, but it is not fair for you to blame us, that is just wrong. We didn’t ask for this to happen and we were always there too so this is what I think. I have thought about it and I think you should really think about the facts and not the lies. Your mom went bankrupt, or whatever, so deal w/ it, but if you want everyone to stop blaming you, then take your own advice and stop blaming our parents and us. We paid her studio, and for most of your stuff, so how can you think we are the bad guys here. Its just all really, really, to bad. And when your house burnt down we were all there for you. So why would you be so mean to us. Your mom took our money for a recital, then why didn’t she see it to the end? I think you feel guilty so your blaming us, but we forgive you.

I dont feel guilty at all. We had no idea the studio was gonna close. I have been fighting to keep it open for 3 years now. Everyones entitled to their own opinion and so am I. Also you DID NOT pay for my stuff at all. I dont know what kind of lies you are hearing but thats bull. That came out of my parents personal accounts. That couldnt have come out of the studio money because we needed everything to pay bills for the studio. So dont you dare say that you paid for my stuff because you DIDNT. Please dont try and tell me how I feel or how i should feel. I dont feel guilty at all. With All of the backstabbing and lies… and this is coming from me this has nothing to do with my mom, I dont feel guilty for blaming you at all! Like I tell everyone I dont need to say much more because Karmas a bitch and will come back and bite you in the ass sooner or later.

Oh and P.S the next 8 weeks with you guys would have been a completle living hell for me, and all the other dancers not involved it would have been tragic. Oh and my mom didnt go bankrupt we had the money to keep it going from family but i guess thats none of your buisness huh???

You say your mom used the money to pay the bills, then why did she tell our parents the IRS took over because she never paid them and never paid payroll taxes that was also in the newspaper. And why was the rent behind for so long there and the other place, and oh yeah, Karma is a bitch, and be ready b/c it will bite YOU in the ass!!! I have totally moved on…………you should try it!!!!!

Teighlor, we can’t possibly know what you and your family are going through. We only know what we are going through. The facts are the facts. If they weren’t factual, the IRS wouldn’t be involved, the Cottleville Police wouldn’t have told me that the rent for the last 10 months on the old studio had never been paid. The Police also wouldn’t have mentioned that she is liable for $2,000.00/month to satisfy this outstanding debt on the old studio. There would also not be a criminal investigation going on. I think most of us are beyond being angry anymore. We have shifted our focus on doing what’s best for our daughters. I’m thankful everyday that my daughter will move on and will become a stronger person because of all this. Unfortunately, you have to continue to live your life in the middle of this horrendous mess created by your mother. When we called SPAD about classes we were told your mother was not allowed to be seen in the lobby. How horrible for you to have to continue to dance in this community when your name will be forever tied to the mess created by your mother. I truly mean this. I can’t imagine my daughter having to live everyday of her life under such circumstances. It’s not about us being out hundreds of dollars. Can we afford it? No, but we live and learn and we are moving on. I sincerely hope you can learn to cope with the anger you must feel. It’s evident by the way your postings read that you harbor a tremendous amount of anger. Some day when you’re older you’ll realize who that anger needed to have been directed at. It’s not us. My daughter looked up to you as someone she wanted to be like some day. She loved it when you helped her because she felt that maybe you saw potential in her. You cut her off at the knees by completely ostracizing her and she never said an unkind word about you. This is probably what’s been most difficult for all of us. Like I said, it’s not about the money, it’s not about how we were misled, it’s about how the whole situation was handled and the subsequent mistreatment of our children. I wish you and your family the best.

Like everyone else, I was completely shocked to find out about the closing of Dance 4 Life. My daughter is not a competitive dancer, but has taken classes there for the past 2 years. Not one person has contacted us about future dance recitals and costumes. Are only the competitive dancers holding a summer recital? Any information you can provide on this is appreciated.

My immediate reaction was that I had been taken…invaded…like someone had broke into my house and stolen money from me. In essence, this is exactly what happened. The money that I had paid for future dance lessons, dance recital costume and dance recital tickets was stolen. I want my money back!!!!!!!!

Who is the lawyer representing Pam? Dubail Judge, the name left on the dance studio door, is not the attorney representing her. The Dubail Judge Law Offices state that not one person from their office is representing Pam S. Robinson. They are not even sure why their name has been connected to Pam. If you have any information on this, please share.

Our lawyers name is Rochelle Stanton…..and all you have to do is send a certified letter stating what you owe to Dance 4 Life’s address. In the letter include copies of tickets purchased, and a list of misc. items that you think you are owed. Refunds will take awhile but will be made if you are patient. Due to legal process all responses need to be in writing. Sorry for the inconvienince.

Thanks
Teighlor
