Moms who struggle on the journey to motherhood

ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

In this week’s Lifestyle magazine, I profile three women who encountered obstacles and detours on their journeys to motherhood.

Many of us do get pregnant fairly quickly, but fertility problems are an increasing trend as women wait longer to have children. Even the path to adoption can be long and filled with ups and downs. Here is the video of Thuy Smith when she finally gets the letter about their baby from China — after nearly two years of waiting.

What the journey to motherhood a breeze or a difficult road for you?

For me, the journey was both. I adopted my daughter and did so alone. Making the decision to adopt, knowing I wouldn’t have anyone available for support or assistance was difficult. But once I realized it was fear of the unknown that made me doubt my intentions, I forged ahead. She’s really the best thing I’ve ever done and the reason I go home at night. Before then it was work or the relationship/man of the moment. She’s the “real” thing that matters.

From the outside, people think that my journey into motherhood was as easy as it gets. My husband and I were expecting after I was off the pill for 5 months. I had a few minor issues with my pregnancy and a quick delivery. What people don’t know is that when you’re trying, any length of time seems like forever! I was charting my cycle and knew that our daughter was concieved on the 78th day of my cycle. When you’re waiting for a period and it doesn’t come it takes a toll, but we stuck with it and are now ready to celebrate our daughter’s first birthday in a few weeks.
Granted, I know there are people in the world who can’t have children or are struggling with a much, much longer wait than we had (friends of ours are going on a year of trying). I understand how hard it is when all you want is a baby and people are aborting them without a thought or throwing them in trash cans.
My message to anyone who is trying and not succeeding is to not give up! There are so many ways to have a family and it’s so worth it no matter how you go about it.
