The dark side of girls’ sports
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
Torn ACLs, chronic back pain and ankle sprains…These are the injuries plaguing the world of girls sports and at a much higher rate than boys.
The New York Times profiled a high school soccer player and her desire to keep playing despite double knee surgeries. You can read the entire story, titled “The Uneven Playing Field,” here.
Is this a problem in the world of St. Louis competitive sports, as well? Do girls suffer more injuries, and if so, what should parents and coaches be doing about it?

The anatomy of teen girls also differs in ways less obvious than the ones teen boys quickly notice. Teen girls are vulnerable to ACL injuries.
There are some with rare physical gifts and a drive to succeed for whom the rewards to be gained from intense, repetitive physical activity at a high level may warrant the risks. For the more average, a balanced regimen of activities that include multiple sports and are supplemented by non-sports activities may be a better alternative.
