Double standard when female teacher is accused of sex crimes?

ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

I’ve been reading the stories about Ferguson Middle School teacher Cathy Heminghaus, who is on trial for charged with 21 counts of statutory sodomy, two counts of a teacher having sex with a student and two counts of plying minors with alcohol.

You can read the latest story here. While it seems there are an increasing number of these sorts of crimes by teachers, the perpetrators tend to be men. Do cases involved female teachers get covered the same way? Do they provoke the same reaction as cases involving male abusers?

Yeah, and as woman, I am disgusted that we seem to be softer on women in all cases of crimes against kids. Whether it is child abuse or child murder, women are getting away with too much by playing victim, or giving sob stories about how they just cannot help but beat their kids, etc.

Steve M. That was obviously some sort of racist remark. Considering this story, this was no YOUNG white woman, and I AM guessing, but most likely so are you, that they boys just may not be urban thugs. Seriously. If This was a man who had did these things with a bunch of girls, he would be lucky to make it to trial. If this were a black man who had done it, even more so. I doubt any of these boys ran home to tell on the woman as if she had done a bad thing either. Another teacher reported it. As a woman, I don’t think that it is fair that women get lesser punishment than men do in any case. Sad thing is, that although there may be a case where the boy will suffer emotionally from something such as this, I think the case is rare. My son and his friends, after they were long out of high school, admitted that they had “messed around” and 2 of them had actually had intercourse with one of their teachers in the school and outside of it. All of these boys are rather decent young men, most of them your typical “honor students” etc., I don’t think anyone sensible would call them “thugs”. None of them have been scarred. They all saw this as a memory from high school. On the other hand, many times the girls are however scarred. It is more rare that they are not. This is the way that boys and girls are brought up. This is sad, but most of you know this.

I would offer that women get off easier due to sexist beliefs. The One belief is that males are not damaged by the abuse and the notion of an older female “seducing” a young boy is the dreams of maleness. Only can a female use as an argument that she was forced to give oral sex to young boys and that she was fearful, even though one of the victims stated that the teacher brought a friend along to watch (this is the lame excuse that the Ferguson Middle School Teacher, Cathy said). I would offer also that the victims were of color. Obviously, the woman is sick but since the victims are males, she probably will get off with a lighter sentence if she was a male.

Finally, I know of someone who was abused in this manner by a teacher. According to the male who was underage at the time, his teacher would pick him up from school under the guise of tutoring him. His parents were grateful for the extra time the teacher was spending with their son. He would go back to her apartment and have sex with the teacher. After several months, the teacher tired of him and broke it off. The male was devastated. He said he had feeling for the teacher. He never told anyone, until years later when he shared it with me. Now the problem is as an adult, he cross boundaries with females and was charged with sexual assault with a female. These crimes have dire consequences on males.

It’s different from the top down. First, boys are less likely to report it. Then, the rumors fly. If a student even hints about innapropriate contact from a male teacher, all of the moms go insane, schools, DFS and the police are all called. If it’s a female teacher, everyone makes excuses. Oh, she’s just handsy. If a male teacher puts his hand on a girl’s shoulder, it’s harassment. If a female teacher pats a boy’s butt, it’s just encouragement. Second, schools don’t investigate as thoroughly if it’s a female. They’re presumed innocent while males are presumed guilty. Now, the press is actually playing up the female teachers much more because it seemingly a novelty, but the cops and courts still don’t attack the women the same. Look at Debra Lefevre in Florida. Multiple contacts, even after being arrested and she got house arrest. There are men that do more time for kissing a girl. I’m not saying it’s right, but it certainly isn’t the same.

It’s not just teachers either. A few years ago, Lafayette had a female wrestler. She was on the news explaining she knew she made the boys uncomfortable, but she wanted to compete. Seems like she just admitted she knew she was sexually harassing the boys - especially according to the student handbook. Think about that, a boy staring too long at her in gym could get 5 days out of school suspension, but she can grab him in places in front of his mother, school, and everyone, and she was called a hero.

At first I thought the “they forced me to do it” was a lame defense that would not work. By reading this board, I see this is not the case. To some it does not seem plausible that an adult woman would willingly perform oral sex on young males. There are individuals in occupations across the spectrum with various “kinks.” Why sex in her husband’s car? While a friend watched? Did the boys tell her, “Next time you better bring a friend!” or “Bring your husband’s car next time.”

Everyone here is assuming she is guilty. However, I’ve known people whose self image was so low that being forced to do something like this is so humiliating, that they will allow them selves to take the guilt rather than report it.

Why are 17 and 18 year old thugs going to a school for 12 year olds? In a report, these guys are in a gang and have already civil suited the school district for money. This seems to be their main motive.

I feel sorry for the teacher who is probably a person who got pushed into a corner and took on the guilt. I’ve seen people who are the victims who sometimes feel so embarrassed they somehow think its their fault it happened. Such I believe is the case here.

So Jack, just wondering if you’re as willing to take the side of male teachers when they’re accused. What if a male teacher says he was blackmailed into it by female students? Would you believe him and blame the accusers for being money hungry?

If so.. great. Innocent until proven guilty.

If not.. Well isn’t that the point of this discussion?
