When kids smoke, parents need to use tough love

ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

The latest federal survey shows that the decline in teen-age smoking has ended and more teens are picking up the nasty habit. In the news story, it  cites the end of many state’s anti-smoking campaigns funded by the tobacco settlement and the continued push by Big Tobacco to market to young  kids. But, parents play an obvious role.

One in five teenagers smokes, and in Missouri one in four adults smoke. And if you find a pack of cigarettes in your teenager’s room or jacket, don’t buy the ‘It’s my friend’s’ excuse. If you smell smoke on their clothes or hair, don’t go into denial and accept that only their friends smoke. Experts tell us that talking to our children about the dangers of smoking is an important way to prevent them from picking up the habit. But, it can’t just be all about talk.

Take action. Snoop through their rooms. Listen when they talk to their friends. And, if you catch a whiff or have the slightest suspicion they may be smoking, drag their butts to a cancer ward to show them where this addiction will lead them. It will take more than just talk and public service announcements to lower the rates of teen smoking.

Kids are oblivious to cancer wards or emphazima. it’s such a stupid, nasty item to buy and taint your body with. But, just like teen sex, no parent can change this becasue there are too many other kids with parents who just don’t care enough to get in their kids face and puff smoke back at them.

Yeah parents, snoop around their rooms. They won’t mind that and not smoke just to get back at you.

Thanks Aisha! Any advice on where I should send my kids to school, what I should feed them for dinner, or what God they should worship? Anything else I should be snooping for when hunting for the lethal cigs? Any good times to search? Wouldn’t want to get caught and have them think I violated their trust. I sit with rapt anticipation, waiting for what the Post Dispatch might tell me to do next.

So, it looks like the anti smoking orgs have created more smoking kids with all that advertising to the kids that they do. Ohio kicked the org to the curb, good riddance. Just so you know, tobacco does not advertise to the kids, the anti smoking morons do, thus, teens are smoking more.

Linda has said it all.
There has not been any TV adverts for cigarettes since 1971.
The antis promote smoking among youth with their very strange TV commercials and school assemblies that interrupt the flow of the normal school day.

I am glad there are kids who think for themselves. Some will take up smoking, others never will.

However, having these adult misfits come in and lecture kids on smoking all the time. They are promoting smoking.

No surprises there. As long as tobacco exists there will be anti-tobacco lobbyists.
They don’t want tobacco use to go away as they would have to find useful employment.

Don’t be fooled for a minute by these wolves in sheep’s clothing.

I was shocked after moving here to see so many adults and teenagers smoking. It’s everywhere! Cigarette butts being thrown out the window, teenagers on smoke break outside retail/fast food store, women driving with a cigarette in one hand a a baby in the backseat… Smoking is way too prevalent in this town and the “oh well, what are you going to do” style of parenting is a big cause of it. How does it start? Do they ask you for a light or do you simply give them one at Christmas?

Yes, parents, step up and talk to your kids. My parents had six children, both of them smoked from the time we were all born, and they smoked for a long time after we all moved out. Three of us six smoke. Three of us were in groups of friends that didn’t smoke. Three of us were in groups of friends that did smoke. Peer pressure is out there. It’s too easy to give into it. Talk to your kids about it. I wish mine had.

Why don’t you antismokers work on the Netherlands a little?

Probably not interested. You don’t need to state the reasons. However, I have met some very anti-tobacco type of people who think nothing of smoking pot. Nothing at all. I have even seen them make smokers leave their house to smoke a cigarette when they pull out the bong. Most people would think when the bong comes out it is a smoking free for all.

You can smoke marijuana in the coffee shops starting tomorrow, but no tobacco is allowed.

Also, prostitution is still legal there.

Keep snooping through your kids’ rooms and I’ll bet they’ll quit saving up for that car to spread their wings a little.
They’ll start saving up for a trip to the Netherlands.

Unbelievable, but then again look at my screen name.

I am tired of hypocrisy, very much so.

You should be, too.

I think a certain amount of people smoke because there are a certain amount of people with dependent or addictive personalities. I’m 24 and I only know a handful of people who smoke and most of them need something to calm their nerves so they turn to cigarettes. I think the days of people smoking because its “cool” are fading. I know I would never date a girl who smokes and most of my friends feel the same way. Perhaps people who want to continue decreasing the smoking rate should look to help people cope with the problems that lead them to dependency.

Yes, and please keep them from skateboarding, bungee-jumping, snowboarding, playing hockey, eating Taco Bell, and every other daredevil activity out there. You think kids don’t understand the risk? Pshaww. Of course they do. Like these others activities, they’re just too damn cool.
