The ultimate birthday party list
One of our summer interns, Lou Isbell, took on a mammoth task. She has created a list of nearly every place to host a child’s birthday party — outside your home. We hope this list makes planning your child’s party easier…and I’d love to hear about your experiences (good and bad) of places you’ve hosted birthdays. Click here to be completely overwhelmed and see the entire list.

I must say, I’ve never understood the fascination with “going” somewhere to have a child’s birthday party. I’ve raised three kids, and only twice in a combined total of approximately 45 birthdays have we “gone” somewhere. When my daughter was 8 we had dinner at a pizza place - with 10 little girls; when my older son was about the same age we had a bowling party.
Other than that, there is nothing wrong with having a good, old-fashioned party at home - sans clowns, entertainers, etc. My budget for a child’s party is $100, and has been for twenty years! Frequently, in the early years, I didn’t come close to that.
The most recent birthday here included homemade pizza, cake and ice cream, and milk to drink (or water, if they preferred); the kids played a trivia game, did some enthusiastic light-saber fighting, and so forth, the party lasted 2 hours (which is plenty, even for 4th graders), and the only slight drawback was 15 kids present (but hey, it’s a big class, what can you do?). And it was all good.
