Could a Blackberry lead to divorce?

A publicist promoting a sex therapist and her CEO hubby sent this amusing release today:

In a shocking recent study, 35% of business professionals confessed that they would choose their Blackberry over their spouse. This obsession with staying plugged into the office is no doubt partially due to today’s unstable economy and skyrocketing unemployment rates. Sam Chapman of Empower Public Relations has banned his employees from Blackberry usage after 6 p.m. and on the weekends in an effort to help his office rest and relax after a hard day’s work.

As Sam says, “I noticed that my employees and I were checking our Blackberries obsessively throughou t non-work hours. As a result, we were not as well-rested or creative as usual, and I personally noticed that my relationship with my wife was suffering as a result.”   Since instituting the Blackberry ban, Sam Chapman and his wife, leading sex therapist Dr. Laura Berman, have seen an improvement in their personal life and in their work life.

Okay, has technology caused a rift in anyone else’s marriage? Would a Blackberry, cell phone or Internet ban improve marriages?

Nowhere in this article does it say that the sex therapist said a blackberry could lead to divorce.
According to what appears here, the sex therapist’s husband was the one attributing the relationship suffering to his obsession with electronic communications.
Journalism school, anyone??????????

No surprises here. Noticed how a lot of people pounce on their cell phones whenever they get a call or text message? Right in the middle of a discussion/conversation/arguement, the person senses the call and checks their phone. They don’t even have to answer it. The act of stopping or pausing the conversation is a show stopper. Wouldn’t be good if the marriage is on the rocks to begin with. Paying more attention to your phone/PDA than your girlfriend/wife? Seems like they wrote a song about this back in the early 70’s: In the year 2525.

Of course I am biased. I hate cell phones - they’re constantly going off around me, and people using them are rude/insensitive beyond belief. Had to laugh when I heard about the increase in eye injuries due to people crashing into things when texting. But I digress…

Further “proof” of the increase in antisocial behavior!

Good point, Mike.
That’s why I have a phone from Consumer Cellular through AAA. They offer deals through a couple of different organizations, but basically they’re for people like me who want a “911″ phone available if I ever need it, but are not obsessed with talking to people while we walk through the grocery store, pretend to drive, or (eww!) use a public restroom.
I sense a real backlash building to the whole “I’m so connected 24/7″ self-important crowd. At least, I’m hopeful there’s a backlash.
Talk to the real person in the room with you.
What a concept!
