A manhunt for a suspect who may have shot and killed a 12-year-old boy has led to four schools being temporarily suspended in the Fort Zumwalt School District. You can read Kim Bell’s breaking news report here. This must be incredibly frightening for the parents and students, who must be wondering if there is a killer on the loose in their area. But, how heartbreaking for the parents of Delarrian Davis, 12, an apparent innocent victim of a drive-by shooting early Tuesday morning in Madison, Ill.

What can be done to reduce violence against children in our area? We tend to brush off the incidents of crime that do not happen directly in our neighborhood, but as this manhunt illustrates so clearly, the effects of crime are NOT limited to geographic boundaries.
