John Burroughs High School’s prom invitation pushes the envelope

UPDATE: Incoming head of school Andy Abbott weighs in with his thoughts on the controversy surrounding these invitations. Read his comments here, in the current Dirty Laundry column.

Is this prom invitation appropriate? KMOX talk show host Mark Reardon showed me a copy of John Burroughs’ invite for prom, and it does seem a little strange. Plus, it says it includes an invite to the after-party hosted by the “devilish” junior class parents, which leads me to think a parent probably saw it before it went to press. Not exactly the Burroughs’ image, is it?

This is about the most inappropriate thing I have ever seen. As a teacher and former HS students’ parent, I would NOT be happy with the school for sending these out and I am by no means a prude. Is this an April Fool’s joke? WOW. I can’t believe the HS administration approving of this. WOW. Anything goes anymore, it seems.

If that made it past EVERYBODY involved, then I would have to say: “Yes, that is exactly the Burroughs image.”

Parents are paying $20,000/year for this type of education? I’m stunned… does the invite come with a condom and syringe of heroin? Just curious…

I am also a teacher at a Public School that once was a class sponsor who had to look over everything the class did for all their parties, etc. with a fine tooth comb!!!! We could not even allow a drink mug prom party favor for attending, as it promoted alcohol. Surely this must be a bad joke???? Someone needs to answer back…..

I’m glad to see that it’s not just the public schools making bad judgements. I never thought it ever was, but that is what the media and those tuition paying snobs want you to think. Just because you pay tuition doesn’t mean your getting a bang for your buck obviously. Your public school districts are trying to maintain a margin of decorum when wacked out parents permit them to.

Man, that’s ugly. How many different script faces can you fit in an invitation? Too many, obviously.

Here’s hoping it was “designed” (and man, do I use that term loosely! by a student with absolutely no training in graphic design, ’cause it shows very little talent.

unfortunately this is genuine. i am shocked that a school with a good reputation would allow something like this. and the junior class parents are sponsoring it? what a sad commentary on the school and the parents.
