Nanny school aims to set the American nanny standard

NOTE:  Nanny training programs have existed before this program and can be found at www.nanny.org. As it says in the blog post below, this information was provided in a release from this new business.

This school sounds like it will be molding the next generation of Mary Poppins. For $60k a year, she better have more than a spoonful of sugar to offer. Check out this release:

The U.S. has no uniform, national standard for baby nurses or nannies.

Monique and Saul Moskowitz, of New York,  have launched first-of-its-kind school that offers high-level nanny training and certification. The school would be for students serious about “nannying” as a profession who want the top jobs that can pay more than $60K a year.

The Absolute Best Care Learning Center, the only New York State Board of Education approved certification course in Nanny Management, will open in this month in Manhattan. The Moskowitzes hope the school sets the U.S. standard for nannies and will become the go-to destination for nannies from all over the world. Tuition is $3500 for a seven-day course. The Moskowitzes hope families who want the best help will pay to send their nannies to the school to get certified and learn the proper ways to manage a family.

Coursework  will include :

The Nanny Manager - Managing the household with its particular personality, culture, style and structure. Are they formal or laid back? Detail oriented or anything goes? Is texting allowed? Are pop-tarts an ok snack? Instead of families interviewing the nanny, nannies interview the family about family functions in half- hour intervals from breakfast to bedtime all logged in a Nanny Manager Book. The school recommends nannies use formal surnames (Mr. and Mrs.) as a more gracious form of communication. This is a profession, not a hobby! Parents are not pals, they’re bosses!

“The Green Household” - How to keep a house environmentally friendly by cleaning and cooking with green techniques and products.
Comfort and Communication - What makes this family comfortable? When dad had a bad day at work, learn to make his “comfort food” - his mom’s mashed potatoes- and call his mom to get the recipe. When little Susie’s acting out, does strong talk or coddling settle her? Become the spoonful of sugar this family can’t live without.

Family Tree and Treasures - Dig for the dynamics, the history that makes this family special. If Susie fails a test, which parent is used to handling it? If dad is a baseball nut but little Johnny strikes out, would a batting coach help? If grandpa is a diabetic, remember to hide the chocolate cake you baked with the kids.

Does this sound like a nanny or a superhuman?

There have been nanny schools around for decades.. The English Nanny and Governess School, Northwest Nanny Institute etc. Interesting to see.. wonder if they are using the International Nanny Associations Beyond Parenting Basics: The International Nanny Association’s Official Guide to In-Home Child Care. I am curious about the certification as well. Something to look into.

I hope they did not learn this from the school of Hollywood. Who wants to put up with someone else’s snotty out of control spoiled brats? Only the elite (with those type kids) can afford a Nanny at 40,000 a year.

I have met with this agency at their Manhattan office and lost all respect for one of the owner’s when he attempted to manipulate me to tell him if I was working with any other agencies in the NYC area. Why does that even matter? If you’re great at what you do there’s nothing to compete with. Your reputation will stand out and will draw people globally to your service, but when an owner tries to gain business from pushing buttons and using manipulation he has lost all connection with the people he’s working with and long term lost any and all referrals. Greed and power will always prohibit one from long term success.

The International Nanny Association has worked very hard for 25 years to set standards for nannies, agencies and nanny training programs. There are no standards for Nanny Training Programs in the United States, any kind of training program can call itself a nanny training program whether it lasts for 2 hours or 2 years.
This school is nothing new, nanny training programs have been around since the 1980’s. The Child Day Care Association of St. Louis had a nanny training program back in the mid 80’s.

I agree. Nanny training courses and schools are not new to our industry. The Alexandria School, for one.
This article is full of inaccuracies. Including the well-known fact that we don’t use the term Baby Nurse (unless you are referring to RN’s). Instead, the accepted terminology for a highly skilled, experienced and professional in-home caregiver for newborns is Newborn Care Specialist. I hope the “school” will deliver useful information and become a great tool for nannies to better themselves through continuing education.

Only out of touch elitists consider nannies topical. The rest of us consider it the wealthy shirking their parental responsibilities so that they can jetset. The rest of society has to put up with the snotty kids that are programmed to feel the rest of us are in their servitude.

I assure you my employer is not jetsetting nor is she shirking her parental responsibilities.
She is simply a professional working mom who works a 10 hour day and still finds time to come home, pick up her kids at soccer, help them with homework, and tuck them in bed.

We train people to cut hair but we don’t formally train people to watch our most precious resource – our children. Hooray for the folks at Absolute Best Care for caring enough to train nannies to be the best they can be. As a working mom I could have used a well trained nanny to watch my children. I wish this school was around then when I needed it.

“Professional Working Mom” is a PC code word for corrosive feminist with severe and psychotic penis envy. She wants all the attention focused on her but still wants to maintain “Hallmark Moments” at the holidays. She’s always the one where you get the unsolicited holiday cards from with the picture of her dysfunctional family inside or on the cover. The male in the picture is a complete wimp and totally neutered but is the same type of dysfunctional psycho micro-manager who evens up the score at work for the fact that he has no power at home. PWM’s are one of the disgusting scum in society that we are now forced to work under in the labor force. She uses every excuse in the book not to perform her duties at the corporation, takes credit for every underling’s accomplishments, rarely in the office except for high profile meetings, first to finger point and often flies in to psychotic rages at the slightest provacation. She never has any problem justifying her extremely inflated opinion of herself or her outrageously overpaid salary. PWM’s are a now a scourge of our American Workforce are a considerable contribution to America’s inability to compete in a Global Workforce.

As a career nanny of 20 years who attended one of these schools, I’m curious to know what can be accomplished in 7 days. The course I took lasted 3 months. We attended 4 hours of class daily and 4 hours working with children in a daycare or preschool. I also hope this course doesn’t give the false impression that once you’ve taken the course, you’re goi g to a $60,000 a year nanny. We all start on the bottom rung of the ladder.
As someone who has cared for children of movie industry families to children of electrical engineers and clothing
makers, I can guarantee you Hollywood children are no different than other children. Every child has their moment.
