My dog, my unborn child

I’m an education reporter here at the Post-Dispatch and I know I make very infrequent posts on Parents Talk Back, but colleagues convinced me to post this here after it got a few guffaws on Facebook.

So.  Anyway.  Here’s a picture of my beagle mutt, Harvey:

Harvey Hahn, beagle mutt.

Harvey Hahn, beagle mutt.

And here’s an ultrasound picture of my unborn kiddo, due in February:

Baby Hahn at @21 weeks.

My husband noticed the resemblance a few weeks ago, when looking at the images on our computer.  “Valerie!  Oh, my God!  Come here!” he said, calling me into his office.  And there was our Harv, in utero.

Last weekend we were driving to Chicago and I gave the digital camera to my two-year-old son, who likes to look at the pictures we already have on the camera.  He clicked to this particular picture, stopped, and said, “Har-bee!”  (And I am almost certain we didn’t point out the resemblance to him at another time.)

For the ultrasound uninitiated, the image is really an upside-look at the frontal view of the baby’s head — the Harvey nose is the baby’s brain, and the eyes are the eye sockets.  I like to call this the “Skeletor” shot, because it’s disturbingly different than the cute button-nosed profiles you usually see at the 20-week ultrasound.

So, expect a beagle baby to arrive come February.  And yes, I’m almost certain my husband is the father.

Harvey is cute! And so is your “beagley baby” due next year. Come join our beagle list, it’s called Happy Tails. Lots of beagle owners there.

Hope to see ya there!
