Missouri Rustic
Dancing Rabbit is an ecovillage that has about 50 people located in rural northeastern Missouri. Their goal is to live ecologically sustainable and socially rewarding lives.
My editor called me and asked if I wanted to go. “I think this will be right up your alley,” he said. He was right, what a cool assignment.
I arrived at the village with one bar on my cell phone. I was greeted at the top of the drive by a very nice man who had directed me to the property, even though he could only hear every other word. The reception was that bad.
The moment I got out of the car I wanted to just start shooting. I could not believe how cool it was to see houses made from old grain silos and abandoned buses! But I had to be polite and greet the community first.
It felt good to be well-matched with an assignment. It felt good to be able to talk with members about what they were doing to create a lighter foot print on the earth.
I’m not sure I could live up to that level of commitment, but the experience was enlightening.
Check out an audio slide show of the village.
