Welcome to PICTURES!
In May 1938, the first issue of PICTURES, the Post-Dispatch’s Sunday magazine, was published and continued weekly until 1996. Today, the photo staff of the Post-Dispatch brings PICTURES back, in Web form, after its 12 year hiatus. We hope to bring the same tradition of rich visual storytelling to the Web, in still pictures, multimedia and videos — with the spirit that made PICTURES thrive for 58 years.
Sunday PICTURES was promoted in the beginning as the biggest newspaper roto-gravure picture section in America. In its heyday, it was likened in photo quality and content to Life and Look magazines. Nothing about the early days of PICTURES was ever predictable. It went from the serious to the sublime, to features that were downright bizarre.
So get ready for the visual stories you don’t see in the paper. Be prepared to learn how we get the images that make you look twice. Ready, set, click…
PICTURES is back!
