Lightning kills 11 cattle
Elie Gardner
St. Louis Post-Dispatch

After looking back at some of my previous posts from the night desk, it looks like I’m the kook who posts the funny animal photos. I’d hate to disappoint anyone, so I’ll continue the trend, at least half way. This is an animal photo, but more of a sad than happy snap.

At first glance, I thought the cattle in this photo were sleeping, but then the file name caught my eye - “Germany Lightning Hits Cows.JPG.” Apparently, they were huddled under the tree to keep out of the storm when lightning struck the tree. It was a costly storm for the farmer and the cattle.

Next time it rains, keep your animals and yourself away from the trees. May these cattle rest in peace.

An undated photo provided by German police shows dead cows lying under a tree in Sexau, southern Germany, on Wednesday, July 30, 2008. The 11 cattle were killed in southern Germany after a bolt of lightning hit the tree they were huddled under to get out of a rainstorm, police said Thursday. (AP Photo/Police, HO)
