Airport exploration

Today I was at Lambert St. Louis International Airport making pictures for an upcoming business story. As I sat in the hallway shooting the tarmac through the window, two nuns walked by. One of them commented on the niceness of my camera, and then they continued to the MetroLink train. The light in the hallway was nice, and I was getting a little tired of the inanimate planes. This picture is the result.

The second frame is another image that caught my eye. It’s the reflection of the tarmac from inside the hallway. I loved the way everything appeared to “triple” in the frame.

(Don’t worry. I made some images for the newspaper too. You can see those in Friday’s Business section.)

The photo of the nun’s is a great shot, well composed with great lighting and shadows. This is also a great image which highlights the subtle differences between browsers.

I thought this was a B&W shot when I viewed it my Windows/IE 7 machine at work. When I viewed on my Mac/Safari at home, I realized that it wasn’t! The nun’ habits are dark blue and their’s just a touch of blue in corner of the window on the left. Back at work today, I compared this same image on 3 browsers - IE 7, Firefox and Safari. In terms of color, only Safari clearly depicted the blues. Also, with IE, the lines in the floor and wall tiles were very jagged and especially pronounced in the floor grates. On the other hand, Firefox and Safari rendered those lines much smoother.

Great pic, great education!
