The Obama family at the Lincoln Memorial

a.k.a. “The picture I was hoping it was v. The picture it actually was”

At first glance, based on the name of the file in our database, I thought this photo of a lone man, facing Lincoln’s statue at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, one week before Inauguration Day, was president-elect Obama. Alas, upon reading the caption, I discovered it was in fact one of his Secret Service detail, standing watch while Obama and his family were out of camera range. Shoot! Why wasn’t it him? Wouldn’t that have been quite a symbolic moment to capture? This second image here is the one that shows the Obama family kinda sorta near the Memorial.

Not anything close to where my imagination took me when I saw and read the file name of the first image. Maybe it happened and the photographer didn’t capture it. I will never know. But I am keeping my eyes peeled in case the situation arises naturally again, and an astute photographer captures it. Let me know if you see it before I do.
