Hoses at the Big Bend Car Wash, 3142 Big Bend Blvd, were kept busy Monday as motorists tried to remove salt and other remnants of last week's snowfall. Danielle Anderson of Maplewood enjoyed the savings of doing it herself at 75 cents a cycle.

On those slow news days I try to recall a mental list of interesting places I’ve seen that might make interesting pictures one day given the right circumstances.  And those circumstances seem to always involve people and light.

Monday was one of those days.

Having run two family cars and one work car through the car wash on Sunday, I figured that people on their Monday lunch break might fill the bays.  Coming up visually empty on Watson Road, where do-it-yourselfers have quite the variety of choice, I remembered the rainbows of Big Bend Car Wash.  It took three visits to shoot what I thought was a passable picture, the first two visits marred by poor light or unwilling photo subjects.

Unfortunately there was no room at the inn, or shall we say the Metro section, to publish the picture in print so here it is.

It’s the best value for a self-service car wash in town, as long lines on sunny days attest. I’ve been there dozens of times, but clearly in the wrong light, because in your photo, instead of it looking flat and garishly overdone, it looks lively and colorful. You always find the just the right light and composition, Robert. And now, I must go wash the car!
I’m sorry it didn’t get to run in the paper.
