A visit to Lone Elk County Park
I have lived in St. Louis since 2003, but until Post-Dispatch co-worker Christian Gooden mentioned Lone Elk County Park as a possible place to look for fall colors, I had actually never been there. I was so thrilled to find such a wonderful place right off of the highway where you could view fall colors, bison, and elk!
I spent an entire morning exploring the park. I absolutely marveled at the fall colors, and the herds of elk and bison.
If you haven’t been you should load up your car and head there now, before the leaves are gone for the season. Watch out for the elk and deer though. Signs throughout the park warn you it’s rutting season, and the animals travel much more during this time.
Lone Elk County Park is located at off of I-44 at North Outer Road west of Highway 141.
Oh, and before you go, take a second to look through our recent gallery of fall colors from Lone Elk County Park and various others spots in the St. Louis region.

Nice shots. Fall went from blooming to almost gone in 2 days last week.
but at least I have the PD gallery! some stellar shots in there.
Not to pick on Steph, but while you were reading the signs about rutting season, did you also catch the sign about staying in your car?
=)
I know, I can’t tell an elk from a bison.
Actually, in the section of the park where the elk are the signs just say to use caution, not to stay in your vehicle. However, where the bison are it says really clearly that you should stay in your vehicle and I did just that
Those guys are huge!
usb- I’m going to have to check out the trail you’re talking about. It sounds beautiful!
