Sometimes, the picture is there long before you arrive
I was once fortunate enough to visit Japan. On a trip from Tokyo to the Mount Fuji area, I stayed at a very nice hotel. The room was plush with exquisite Japanese decor. So much, in fact, that the foyer to the room itself contained a shoe cabinet and a floor plan designed to clearly indicate a boundary that you were not to go beyond wearing shoes.
But just beyond that there as a small cut out in the wall that contained a vase sitting on a decorative mat holding a beautiful fresh flower. And it was nicely lit by an unseen light from above. Since I already had my camera on my shoulder, my natural reaction was to grab it and start photographing the flower. I must have spent five minutes there, looking through my viewfinder. It took several attempts to line up my frame, get an appropriate exposure, making I got it just right. Everyone else I was traveling with walked in, saw the entire 3-bedroom suite, put their bags down, and started a conversation before I left the foyer. I was captivated that much.
I now have that photo on my wall at home.
