St. Joseph Croatian Church is the second oldest Croatian Church west of the Mississippi. The church was dedicated in 1904. Croatians first came to the St. Louis area in the 1860s, up from New Orleans on riverboats.  There are approximately 50,000 Croatians and Americans of Croatian descent living in the immediate bi-state area.

“Who knew?” I had no idea how deep the historic roots of this town really go.

I had an assignment to photograph the Croatian Junior Tamburitzans. Wow what and interesting experience. The kids came out in costumes, sang and danced to traditional music. It was a cool experience. Members of the Croatian community celebrated during the annual Croatian Day and Homecoming Picnic, with food, music and good conversation.
