Sometimes during a rush, I miss a contender

Early in last week’s heat wave, I set out to make some heat photos in Collinsville, Illinois. I found a man, and older man named Tom Odom, who was working in the direct sun trimming grass around the bottom of head stones at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery. I hung out with him for about an hour as he took frequent breaks from the heat at his truck which was parked under the nearest tree.

Sometimes, in a rush to get photos into the newsroom either on the newspaper’s deadline or for our online top module on STLtoday.com, I look over photos in my take that may have deserved more attention. Going through a second time, I came across a photo that I feel I should have offered to my photo editor.

This is the photo that ran in the paper last Wednesday:

CAPTION:

“It helps to put wet towels on your head so the breeze can blow through them and
cool you off,” said Tom Odom during one of many frequent breaks Tuesday
while he trims the grass around gravestones at St. Peter and Paul
Catholic Cemetery in Collinsville.

This is the photo I missed that I believe deserved consideration.

What do you think?

Second one, hands down. It’s different and the composition (in my opinion) is stronger.
