Photo bootcamp starts this week in Kentucky - the Mountain Workshops
Starting this week, hundreds of hungry photographers invade a small Kentucky town, as they gather for the annual Mountain Workshops, also commonly referred to as a bootcamp for photojournalists. It’s organized by the good folks of Western Kentucky University’s photojournalism department and its faculty includes some of the best photojournalists in the country. I’ve had some personal experience with the workshop, having been a lab tech there for three years, and once as a participant. What is it like? You eat, breathe, and drink photography for a week, with very little sleep in between. The last few years, they’ve added multimedia to their menu. And at the end, you come out a better photographer and maybe even a better person. It’s too late to play along this year, but you can sign up for the Fall 2009 workshop.

Hmmmmmm…. Am I seeing a little competition between Huy and Laurie about which workshop is better??
You probably are seeing some competition John, in a friendly sort of way—but these two workshops always happen about the same time each year. I’m proud that we had two photographers who were on the faculty. Both Laurie and Huy are excellent teachers. Huy didn’t mention it, but he was also an instructor at the Mountain Workshop last week.
Right now on our photo staff, we have four photographers and editors who graduated from Western Kentucky, and three from the University of Missouri. We’ve drawn heavily on these two schools over the years as a source for both staff photographers and photo interns, and in the past the number has been even higher. We’re fortunate to have two of the finest photojournalism programs in the country within just a few hours of St. Louis.
Many thanks to Larry Coyne for allowing Huy to make it to Mountain Workshop this year! Huy was a wonderful teacher and a massive help to the multimedia workshop and the students. He was a great addition to the staff and I hope he can make it back in the future!
