Mark your calendars for Photo Night in St. Louis

Just back from a very quick weekend trip to Little Rock for ‘Photo Night’, a production of the National Press Photographer’s Association and organized by our regional director Karen Seagrave, a staff photojournalist at the Arkansas Democrat Gazette.

I hadn’t been back to Little Rock for four years, where I covered the dedication of President Bill Clinton’s presidential library and got the only massage of my life.

Really.

It was cold and rainy that day and I was having some annoying neck problems. Four hours working with heavy telephoto lenses on a photo platform did me in and when we all got back to the media center to send our pictures and stories, there was a team of massage therapists from the local school. I could barely move at that point and they fixed me up, but still it’s funny to think about getting a massage in connection with the former president.

Sorry, back to ‘Photo Night’….

Fellow Post-Dispatch photographer J.B. Forbes and I presented work to a group of about fifty professional news photographers and mass communication students at the University of Central Arkansas in nearby Conway. It is always great for me to kick back and watch Forbes run his slideshows. He’s been with the P-D for 34 years and has the energy of some interns. We almost lost him a year or so ago when he thought about taking an early retirement, but he came to his senses and stayed put.

There was also a photo contest, where two skilled photographers walked away with Nikon D90s with 18-105 mm Nikkor lenses, and lots of door prizes including fancy camera bags from ThinkTankPhoto.

Which brings me to the point of this blog post…’Photo Night’ is very likely coming to St. Louis in the spring, so mark your calendars for sometime in April at a site to be determined.

John - The organizers of the regional NPPA Photo Night are always in search of venues to hold their event. The key is keeping their costs low. The get together is free, including dinner. Generally the NPPA costs involve getting speakers to the venue if they are not local. So what they really need is donated space to hold the event that can handle a reasonable number of people. Karen Seagrave, our regional director, was able to get one of the mass communication lecture halls at the University of Central Arkansas for the Little Rock event. It worked out great with their built-in digital projector. The main reason she is now looking at St. Louis is that there has been great interest by a local university.
