Remembering Kyla

Kyla

Kyla celebrated her 10th birthday early at school.

Today would have been Kyla Miller’s 12th birthday. In my mind I imagine a party with purple balloons and decorations. Purple was her favorite color. She would have hugged everyone who came or at least given them her signature “curly five.” But there will be no celebration today. Kyla died August 25 2007, two days shy of her 10th birthday.

I produced a story on Kyla and her family before coming here to St. Louis. I worked at The Evening Sun in Hanover PA. Myself and the reporter spent nine months with the Millers, witnessing their highs, lows and everything in between. I learned so much from that little girl. She taught me to have faith even in the darkest circumstances, to be kind to everyone, and to cherish every day that you are given.

I’m posting the link to the audio slideshow I produced on her battle with cancer. Please watch and help keep Kyla’s memory alive.
