Throughout the presidential campaign, and even before, Callie Shell has had excellent access to Barack Obama. She has achieved what photojournalists long to do on assignment: Blend perfectly into the background and have the photo subjects either forget you are there or simply don’t care any more that you are there. As a result, her behind-the-scenes photographs have an intimate quality different from the more expected photograph “opportunities”.
