Emerson says nope to stimulus, McCaskill won’t commit
WASHINGTON — Democrats probably won’t need Rep. Jo Ann Emerson’s vote to pass the $825 billion stimulus bill later today and they’re not going to get it.
The office of Emerson, R-Cape Girardeau, says that she won’t support the economic recovery package.
In committee, she voted against the legislation, wondering aloud why it included $600 million for the federal government to modernize its vehicle fleet with plug-in and alternative fuel cars when there are no plug-ins on the market and no E85 (85 percent ethanol) available in Washington.
Meanwhile, in the Senate, Sen. Claire McCaskill said she is pleased with the Senate version of the stimulus because of its spending accountability and absence of earmarks, both of which she had pushed for.
Among other provisions, the bill approved by the Senate Finance Committee and headed to the floor protects whistleblowers who disclose shady dealings and requires a special website with details about recovery spending, contracts and grants.
McCaskill’s office said she won’t make a decision until she sees the final form of the package — but it would be surprising for President Barack Obama to lose the support of a senator like McCaskill whom he considers a close ally.

Shame on you Rep. Emerson. America needs an economic recovery, not politicians trying to play games. I thought you were a moderate. How dissapointing…
America needs some sanity in our elected leaders. How many jobs will be created with 600 million of a modernized vehicle. 100% of the time it is less expensive to drive a vehicle you already own instead of buying a NEW vehicle.
If Claire said she hasn’t decided, she’s is lying like a rug. Only a fool would believe she isn’t going to vote with her prince Barack.
Good for her. These bailouts (yes, this one is a bailout) are created by the super rich bankers for the super rich bankers. The rest of us will have to suffer for it. How have those previous ones worked?
Well Done Rep Emerson! Hang tough…
As for Claire… you haven’t moved your nose out of The One’s rear end yet… why should we think you will now?
Because you won’t.
McCaskill just voted to put a tax cheat in charge of the treasury. Bond couldn’t even be bothered to vote.
Good for Representative Emerson. No is the way to go and I just wish more congressmen had done the same thing today and last fall.
Calling it a bailout is right. $335 million dollars for STD prevention. Just say no costs $0. Yeah, I know, that requires people to act responsibly. Also, I got the story from the Drudge Report, but at least it is backed up with facts.
The link to the bill can be found at the official House site (the $335 mil can be found on page 147):

No stimulus here, just a lot of pork spending. That didn’t take very long.
Claire will fall in line and do just what Obama wants, vote for this non stimulus bill.
Thank you Rep Emerson. From what I have seen in the media, only 16% will be spent in 09. No stimulus from that. Favor building capital projects, which are longer term and a real investment in the economy and will take years. Build Wind, Solar and Nuke Plants. Drill everywhere. Get us off foreign oil. AND,the Banks need to be forced to start lending to credit worthy companines and people. No, Zero, Not one, more mergers. Only small banks not in trouble becaue they can actually be managed. Surprise! Surprise. Big is bad. So is big governemnt.
Ma Kettle rides again…no jobs created…just pork for taxpayers to pay ..a Democrat again!
Typical yapper GOP response to any efforts which marginally help the middle class.
The House plan didn’t go far enough to support those mst hrdest hit by the economic crisis and to fully fund the needed support for infrastructure building America needs to compete in the New Economy. Hopefully, Speaker Pelosi will stick to her guns in the conference committeee as the Senate bill will most certainly be more right wing oriented.
President Obama, be the change you promised!
