Biden Blitz continued, Jefferson City version
JEFFERSON CITY – On his way to St. Louis, Joe Biden stopped at ABB factory in the state capital this afternoon, where he spoke about the importance of the middle class and maybe (see the comments) avoided any of the gaffes for which he has become famous.
He said he and President Barack Obama won’t consider the economic plans a success unless workers come out of it with a better quality of living. Biden also said that the United States will “return to its rightful place as the leading nation in the world.”
He brought along Commerce Secretary Gary Locke to talk up the stimulus plan and its proposed energy grid.
Locke said the energy grid will allow households and appliances to connect and use energy at the cheapest time of day.
“The Recovery Act funds a critical down payment on how we use energy,” Locke said.
Biden and Locke were flanked by Rep. Ike Skelton and Gov. Jay Nixon onstage. And Secretary of State Robin Carnahan showed up to watch but not speak, as did state Sens. Brad Lager, R-Savannah, Victor Callahan, D-Independence, and Carl Vogel, R-Jefferson City.
UPDATE: See Jeffrey Tomich’s story on the Mother Ship today about Wind Capital Group LLC benefiting from the stimulus.

And this isn’t a gaffe?
Biden also said that the United States will “return to its rightful place as the leading nation in the world.”
Did anyone follow up on this remark as reported? I would suggest asking when the Vice President of the United States started believing the U.S. is NOT the leading nation in the world? It’s hard to believe Mr. Biden would really feel this way. Since this is a partial quote, I would like to know the context and perhaps see the full quote in its context. I think it is a fair request and a fair question.
So Joe didn’t tell anyone in a wheelchair to stand up or ridicule the Special Olympics to get a few laughs on late night TV like his boss Obummer? At least with Biden we know it won’t last. He’ll be showing his true colors again soon.
shawn and JoeCool: As people who seem to love ridiculing public gaffes, you must have had a wonderful time the past 8 years. Why, with so many of George W. Bush’s public gaffes to choose from, its hard to imagine that you got any sleep at all. If you’d like to reminisce, I suggest starting here: http://www.dubyaspeak.com/ [hilarity and perspective ensue]
Dwight, I agree totally about Dubya’s long record of misspeaking and dumb-*ssed comments. That’s not what this is about. I simply asked for context about the partial quote attributed to the current vice president of the United States. I think it’s a fair request and I promise to refrain from flames. But IF the report is to be read AS REPORTED by the Post-Dispatch reporter at the scene, you are ignoring what she has the VP saying or suggesting - that the U.S. is somehow NOT the leading nation in the world. I am a political independent and last time around, I voted for Obama-Biden. I just don’t care for the implication the reporter has presented - but then, it’s a partial quote and I want some context.
Hey, I just noted the reporter’s update — evidently the actual story that was put into the Post-Dispatch avoided the partial quote from the vice president indicating he believed America is not a leading nation.
So either the quote was questionable - or the editors at the Post-Dispatch decided not to let the news it represented get in the way of some agenda. For it would surely be news if the vice president said he did not consider America a leading nation in any way.
This missing of the real news reminds me of the story told about the Johnstown Flood. A rookie newspaper reporter showed up at the flood scene and tried to wax poetic to get attention by opening his story as follows: “God sat on a hillside in Johnstown and cried.” The editor appropriately wired back: “Forget flood, interview God.”
If the vice president said what is attributed to him in the partial quote, it is NEWS because it is the vice president saying it - that is, unless the reporter or the Post-Dispatch also believe the partial quote and thus found it unremarkable.
If the Post-Dispatch cannot provide context for the quote it put on its web site but ignored in its print edition, it should at least give us the full quote.
And hey Dwight, the reporter who wrote the original entry was hasty about noting Biden’s past gaffes - indeed they were - in the very first paragraph of the story, so she brought up the matter. She made a flat declaration that there were not any gaffes during Biden’s visit to the plant. So I would like some clarification of the partial quote she attributed to him.
Fair enough shawn. I don’t disagree with what you are saying; I just don’t agree with it to the same degree that you do.
Thanks for the respectful reply though — they are increasingly rare on these forums (see: shameful discussion about interracial relationships on page about “7 Best Places to Smooch,” which features, oddly enough to some people, a picture of an interracial couple kissing)
Commenters,
Thanks for the good questions. I didn’t write down the whole quote — my bad. I’ve been trying to find a transcript online, with no success. I do know that he was talking about building a green economy right before he said the quote in question.
If someone else finds a transcript, I would greatly appreciate it. Otherwise, I’ll keep looking.
Dwight,
I see you and Obummer use the same tired left wing tactic of bringing up Bush every time there is criticism of BHO or Joe Hair Transplant. Stop living in the past. It’s Obummer’s show now. Deal with it.
if the quote is about “about building a green economy” then Vice President Biden is correct there are other nations that are ahead of the United States in green energy. Germany gets around 30% of it’s electric from solar and wind. So if thats the context he is accurate.
Joe Cool, I agree with you. We can’t keep living in the past. Ummmm, why do you keep brining up something from the past regarding Vice President Biden’s gaff with then State Senator Chuck Graham who happened to be seated (of course) behind a rope line with a curtain on it making it impossible for VP Biden to know he was in a wheel chair.
It kind of reminds me of when President Bush made this comment “Bush: You gonna ask your question with shades on?
Wallsten: Yes…
Bush: But there’s no sun out here.
Wallsten: It depends on your perspective.
Bush: Touché.”
Turns out the guy was blind. I guess you got a big kick out of that Mr. Cool Everyone makes mistakes. I don’t recall anyone writing about that on these posts. So, if your all about NOT living in the past give it up about Biden’s gaff.
