Kinder, Bearden endorse Thompson for president — breaking with Blunt/Talent

Actor and former U.S. Sen. Fred Thompson, R-Tenn., has yet to announce whether he’ll run for president — but that hasn’t stopped two prominent Missouri pols from already signaling their support.

Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder announced in a Sunday editorial in the Southeast Missourian (first noted by Combest) that he’s backing Thompson, who Kinder lauds as “the real deal, the closest thing to a natural we’ve had (or are likely to see) since Reagan…”

State Rep. Carl Bearden, R-St. Charles and the No. 2 Republican in the state House, announced his support a day earlier.

In an email sent out early Saturday, Bearden praised Thompson and announced his plans to circulate a “Draft Thompson for President” petition. ( Bearden is telling people to email him at “draft.thompson@carlbearden.org” and include their first and last name, as well as their hometown. Signatures will be added to the national Draft Thompson effort, Bearden said.)

“For 2008, Republicans are looking for strong, proven conservative leadership, and that’s why I urge Senator Fred Thompson to enter the presidential race,” said Bearden, the House’s speaker pro tem.

“When you compare the field of candidates and potential candidates, Fred Thompson clearly stands out with his consistent conservative record and his unwavering Republican values,” he added. “…Fred Thompson possesses the character, the charisma, and the vision to win the White House and lead our great country.”

Such announcements by Kinder and Bearden signal that Gov. Matt Blunt and former Sen. Jim Talent, R-Mo., haven’t locked the state up for their favored candidate, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

Kinder’s declaration, in particular, could start a Republican stampede — if not for Thompson, perhaps for other Republican candidates, notably former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani. Some Missouri party activists have been whispering for months they weren’t going to join the Romney train, but few have said so publicly.

Kinder and Bearden’s announcements may change all that — and soon.

One hopes that all the political parties have a real race. Republican party (like the democrats) are a big tent affair and their is more than one qualified canidate for the Oval Office.

Thompson is an interesting candidate. Don’t know much about him outside of his acting career but like him much better than Romney. McCain’s support of Bush’s war has lost him a lot of support including mine. Last year I touted him but not anymore. I liked him when he was the outsider. Now he acts like the establishment candidate.

Reagan, Schwartzenegger, Thompson, Jesse Ventura, Kinky Freeman, Clint Eatwood, Sonny Bono, that soft guy from Love Boat, and dozens more, all Republicans whose only claim to fame is entertainment. Republican voters are very easily influence by celebrity….How shallow.

Romney is getting his $$$ millions from the Mormon church. Big deal, so he gets 12 million votes if nominated. He already shot himself in the foot with his “avid hunter” lie. Similar to me saying I’m an avid golfer because I played miniture “put-put” golf when I was 14 years old…This guy is wahed-up.

No wonder Republicans feel compelled to support another television star whose only claim to fame is the phrase….”Well Jack, you better make sure you can prove it in court”.

So Mrs Garrison, which of the socialists running under the dhimmicrat tag do you favor, or will you simply allow others to make that decision then flaunt the nominee as the greatest person ever?

I picture you as a Kucinsh guy, a total joke.

Like that will ever happen. It would be interesting on a couple fronts though, lets say Romney won the Republican nomination and the Obamination won the other side. The media would have a Mormon vs Black Separatist Church angle, which may be good for ratings.

But back to your nightmare ticket, Shrillary will NEVER accept the bottom of the ticket if BHO offered it to her. If he offered it to her, he might as well paint a huge target on himself, and I dont mean the politcal kind either.

Unfortunately, with racist, intolerant Republicans like Limbaugh, O’Reilly, and Coulter…Obama wont need a target on his back…

Don’t under or over estimate Hilary…She has enough personal qualities to accept the 2nd spot if it means doing something about healthcare and stopping unpatriotic lackey Republicans who are more concerned about money and corporate profits instead of caring about the American people.

Well, Mr Kinder claims he will not run again the Gov in 2008. OK then, what if the GOP ends up with a Romney-Blunt ticket? I for one will start looking for KINDER 2008 buttons, cause it will be the best thing this state has gotten for a candidate for GOV in years!

Obama has to get past Hillary first…what she’ll do to him is far worse than anything Limbaugh might bring up.
