Leaked Obama memo: caution regarding Clay, Carnahan campaign roles

The mixed reviews that U.S. Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., received for last week’s performance in MSNBC’s Democratic presidential debate may be the least of his post-debate headaches.

According to the latest Newsweek, which went online over the weekend, a copy of one of his internal campaign faxes — inappropriately sent on Senate letterhead — ended up slid under the door of one of the magazine’s reporters covering the debate. (Tip to readers: This is how press leaks often are done when everybody is staying in the same hotel.)

According to Newsweek’s account (emailed by a source to yours truly over the weekend), “…The fax itself shows the campaign working to round up endorsements from established party leaders.

“In the ‘talking points’ for a call to Rep. William Clay of St. Louis, Obama is advised by his Chicago political team to say: ‘Your endorsement is important to me and I hope that you will join the movement supporting my campaign. I would like you to take an official leadership role for my campaign in Missouri.’ ”

“But the memo cautions Obama. ‘Avoid discussing specific titles,’ it says. ‘Staff will work this out later. YOU can assure him he will be one of the main leaders in Missouri for your campaign.’

“The guidance for Rep. Russ Carnahan of Missouri was similar. ‘Carnahan is just waiting for an official ask from you to endorse publicly,’ the staff advises. ‘Assure him he will be one of YOUR leaders in the state, but DO NOT lead him to believe that he will be in an exclusive role.’ ”

Such instructions are apparently part of the ramp up for Obama’s dual fundraisers in St. Louis — one low-dollar open to the public and the other high-dollar invitation-only at the Chase — slated for May 11.

Before the debate, anyway, rumors had been heightening that a certain other higher profile Missouri Democrat and fellow senator — Claire McCaskill — known to be leaning toward the Big O was preparing to soon make her support public.

Neither McCaskill nor her staff have responded to queries about such talk.

As regulars may recall, the biggest Missouri endorsements so far (on the Democratic side) are: former Lt. Gov. Joe Maxwell for former Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C. (who also seemed off his game during the debate), and St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay for Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y. (whose debate performance has gotten the most accolades).

Hmmm…

Looking to minimize ol’ Lacy…

This Obama or his staff is smarter than I thought…

Imagine that! A campaign strategy that minimizes the role of some party members……HMMMMMMMM. After all you can’t make anyone appear to be “in charge” if they are not part of the inner circle.

Why should this be of any surprise to anyone?

Kind of like being a US Attorney…CR?

OK Mrs. Garrsion, I’ll bite!

The U.S. Attorney’s serve at the pleasure of the POTUS. End of story.

Mr. Clay and Mr. Carnahan serve at the pleasure of their constituents. Minimzing the role of an ELECTED official from one’s own party is hardly a vote of confidence from the Obama camp.

These two situations are totally and completely unrelated!

Okay, Am I stupid or what?

Sound pretty honorable to me. Don’t mislead/deceive anyone, one of the statments made, etc…

Things discussed in the memo are normal and necessary when running for polical office aren’t they?

And, is really nothing necessary for the public to know, as these things are still in the planning mode.

Appear that reporters are attempting to make a mountain out of a sand castle.

Sounds like a pretty common occurance that is being used to divide the dems. Or just slow Obama’s campaign.
Find some thing that they might construe as insult…
Make them think it is one.

Every candidate out there is looking at the same established officeholders and trying to get them to pick them.

Sounds like the story should really be about why none of the other candidates have the elected Dems all wanting to be involved.

Make a positive seem like a negative…Sounds familiar.

I think that the issue is that neither one of these guys is important enough to the Obama campaign to warrant any “special’ treatment…

After all just what is Lacy going to “give’ to Obama? The north side of the City? Don’t think he’ll get it on his own?

Doesn’t look like he’s worried about them supporting Hilary either.

The Bluest part of the state has three “big’ pols these two and Slay. Hilary already picked off Slay and the Obama camp doesn’t think that the other two are worth anything…

Obama and I agree then…

Any Presidential candidate would be well advised to line up as many endorsements as possible from well respected, serious, intelligent political leaders.

Therefore, I assume Obama is going through Russ Carnahan to get an endorsement from his sister.

There is a hidden messsage here and so far everyone has ignored it.

The constituents of both Mr. Clay and Mr. Carnahan should pay very close attention to this “leaked” memo. It shows just how insignificant either or both of these “leaders” are with respect to the offices they hold. They are obviously not considered “players” on any sort of level. This means their constituents, who placed them into office, are the real losers.

When the gov. $$$ are handed out in the various appropriations bills, guess who is going to be at the back of the line? Those of you in the 1st and 3rd Congressional Districts would do well to remember this next time you go to the polls……assuming you even care.
