Thompson wins Republican Assembly straw poll

Actor/former senator Fred Thompson didn’t need to show up in St. Louis to claim a victory at the National Federation of Republican Assemblies convention, held at the Airport Marriott over the weekend.

Thompson’s Web site is taking note that he won Sunday’s straw poll, which gauged the preferences of the 200-250 conventioneers from around the country.

Here’s the breakdown, as reported by the Arkansas GOP Assembly contingent on its Web site:

Fred Thompson 33%
Mitt Romney 15%
Ron Paul 14%
Duncan Hunter 10%
Tom Tancredo 10%
John Cox 6%
Newt Gingrich 3%
Mike Huckabee 3%
Tommy Thompson 2%
John McCain 2%
Rudy Giuliani 1%
Sam Brownback 1%

Speaking of Thompson, Sen. Loudon endorsed him last week.

Poor showings by the establishment moderates aren’t a surprise, but a mere 1% for Giuliani is. I am surprised that Huckabee didn’t do better with this group. Probably the biggest news is the double-digit 3rd place finish by anti-war Libertarian Ron Paul.

Whoa! What a huge endorsement for Fred. That tells me all I need to know. If Louden is for Thompson, I won’t be supporting Fred. Note to Louden and Kinder - Fred isn’t running yet and I guarantee he won’t be.
You are going to feel really stupid in Nov. of 2008 because of this endorsement.

You’ve got me curious, Centrist. Thompson is virtually tied for the lead in the Rasmussen tracking polls, and he’s already severed his ties with his hit tv series. Why do you “guarantee” that “he won’t be [running]”?

Since Matt F on the Pres Buzz appears incapable of doing any work - here is a little ditty on pretty boy from the Union-Leader:

PRESIDENTIAL candidate John Edwards said last Thursday that Democrats should not accept campaign contributions from Rupert Murdoch, owner of News Corp., which owns FOX News, or any News Corp. executives. Edwards even returned campaign contributions from three News Corp. employees.

“The time has come for Democrats to stop pretending to be friends with the very people who demonize the Democratic Party,” said Edwards, who led the Democratic boycott of a debate co-sponsored by FOX News.

This is from a candidate who claims he wants to unite the country, not divide it.

Back in the 1980s, House Speaker Tip O’Neil, a Democrat, would attack President Ronald Reagan to no end, portraying him as heartless and mean-spirited. Reagan would attack O’Neil’s policies as too far left for the country and out of step with the American people. Then each week the two would sit down to dinner together as old friends. They knew better than to let politics get in the way of a friendship.

Two Sundays ago, Edwards held a campaign event at Mack’s Apples in Londonderry. Mack’s is owned by Andy Mack Sr., an avowed Republican-hater. Mack regularly posts signs on his property criticizing Republicans and urging people to vote for Democrats.

By Edwards’ logic, no Republican should buy apples from Mack’s Orchard. But don’t expect Edwards to be driving business away from Mack’s anytime soon. This isn’t about intellectual consistency. It’s about scoring points against primary opponents. Hillary Clinton has taken campaign money from Rupert Murdoch.

But it turns out that Edwards has profited from News Corp. too. He received $800,000 for a coffee table book he allegedly edited, published by a News Corp. subsidiary, The New York Post reported last week. (The Post is owned by News Corp.) So much for not taking money from the evil Murdoch.

Edwards’ hypocrisy is obvious. He should stop trying to score points by manufacturing controversy and stick to debating the issues.

Your welcome, Matt, I can’t believe I have to do your job and post on Jo’s blog.

Interesting that the clear Republican choice (in this poll) isn’t even in the running yet. The Republicans need to get their ducks in a row or hope for Hilary to win the Dem nomination (so they can just run an anti-Hilary campaign) or they are in trouble.

Prediction…..Thompson beats Hillary in 08. He is playing his cards right.

Let’s just hope Hillary has a chance to debate Fred (Flintstone) Thompson.

I don’t get the love for Thompson. I guess when the Republican field is as uniformly terrible as this year’s is, GOPers are resorting to transplanting their own pet positions onto the least known quantity.

Thompson is a putz and his fundraising is laughable. He has as much chance at the presidency as Mike Gravel.

Yeah, 3.8 million raised in one month by a non-candidate. Without direct mail. Without telephone fundraising. Laughable. ???

Wake-up Eric. You’re worst nightmare is here. A solid, consistent conservative, with smarts, charisma and a record to stand on. Plus let’s add to the mix, a smart, politically savvy wife and that he’s a tough campaigner according to those who covered his Senate race in TN.

Fred (Flintstone) Thompson drove across Tennessee in an old 2-door pick-up truck to get elected to the U.S. Senate….That might work in the foothills of the Appalacians, but he’s going to need more than a old Ford truck and a new sweet low-cut “Daisy Mae” wife to attract sophisticated voters in the Blue states….Save the corn-cob pipe BS.. and the plaid flannel shirts for the “bible-thumping” Red state hillbillies….

My, my, my…

The left is a bit shaken over Fred now aren’t they?

Garrison, you hafta know his red pickup was a prop. Thompson rented it. Drove it two blocks for campaign events then left in his usual SUV motorcade. No need to lend Fred any working man bona fides for such a lame gimmick.

Oh, and Mark, spin it all you want but $3 million is a dud. Adding the fact that he’s already losing staffers and you get a not-yet-declared campaign that’s tractionless. If Thompson is the GOP candidate, he’ll be slaughtered. With the possible exceptions of Gravel and Kucinich, the entire Dem field would wipe the floor with Thompson’s sorry carcass. The only GOP candidates who stand a chance are Romney, who’s really creepy, even Mormonism aside, and Giuliani, who is a mindless, powerhungry, authoritarian scumbag.

President Thompson? That doesn’t pass the giggle test.

Eric, Eric, settle down. 3.8 million in one month, raised entirely by volunteers and supporters, polling at the top, for a non-candidate. Looks pretty solid to me. Plus, unlike everyone else, Thompson hasn’t been running since 2004. He is building a solid team and ensuring the internal dynamics will stand solid during the campaign. But I don’t think facts matter to you judging by your ad hominem attacks.

Why is it the liberals always end their comments with nasty attacks? Is it impossible to have an intelligent debate, on the issues in question, on the qualifications of the candidates, without returning to grade-school yard taunting?

Call it what you will, but our left leaning “friends” are some the most hate filled people in this country. Read just a few of Garrison’s posts and you will see him/her steaming under the collar. I guess they all are still angry at the fact that they trotted two candidates out against an “idiot” like GWB, and he beat them both. Nevertheless, they are aaaaaaannnnnnngggggggrrrrrrrryyyyyyy!!!!!

So…you like having an “idiot” as your President.

London Times, November 6th, 2004.
“How Can 59 million Americans Be So Stupid?”

Disappointment is a better word Lunatic. Our Founding Fathers were hoping you would take democracy a little more seriously.

Our founding fathers also stopped listening to propaganda from London around 1776 or so.

I am impressed by Fred Thompson’s showing and winning the first round of the straw poll. I belive when Fred Thompson announces after Labor Day, the Repub field will change dramatically. Many conservatives and Republicans are still waiting on the sidelines, and Fred Thompson brings them all together. All of the other Repubs have good points and bad points. Fred brings everthing together. If he is doing this well before annoucing, think how well he will do after he announces!

OK Blue, I’m not a big fan of Fred for the White House, But he is better that that Rudimacromney crew!
My $$$is still on Tancredo! Did you know that last year, illegals from over 150 countries OTHER than Mexico were caught crossing into this nation? How many were from the mid east and how many of them wish nothing but ill things to this country? The day will come when the moderate to liberal groups will whine and repeat top themselve ‘Oh if we only had…!
