Blunt: Pessimistic about efforts to re-open Highway 40

Gov. Matt Blunt offered strong praise today for the Missouri Department of Transportation and St. Louis motorists, for their handling of the now five-day-old shutdown of Highway 40.

For his part, Blunt — in town for several public events — executed his own alternate route of flying into Creve Coeur Airport and then traveling by van down Interstate 70.

Pre-shutdown, Blunt often flew into Spirit of St. Louis Airport and then was driven down Highway 40 to his destination.

What about those bills already pre-filed to force the reopening of at least a few lanes of Highway 40?

If passed by the Legislature, Blunt says he’ll look at any bill before deciding whether to sign or veto.

But he added, “Given what we’re seeing (traffic-wise post-shutdown), I don’t see those pieces of legislation getting very far.”

Expect the governor to get some fan mail tomorrow from fellow Republicans in the Legislature who are pressing for Highway 40 to be partially reopened.

Sorry, people, but the Lindbergh bridge is gone. It is now officially impossible to reopen the highway. Get over it!

A bill to reopen part of 40…wow, even my disbelief in this state’s government is stretched with this one.

Don’t the Republicans have other things to do? Some stem cell researcher to burn at the cross, or some such thing?

the lindbergh bridge, I believe, will be rebuilt within a couple weeks, by the time the bill passes, the bridge will be rebuilt; plus the bridge is lindbergh, not highway 40; all you need to open 40 is get the rubble off the road; unless I’m wrong, way to have a clue my brother Nick; here’s a quarter, maybe you can buy one. :) sort of typical for the shutdown the region what do we care contingent.

uh oh–maybe now the Republicans will re-start their attacks on “gays” in Missouri–seeing what other civil liberties they can destroy all in the name of “family values” and “tradition.”

Of course-as someone already mentioned, it’s hard to squeeze that in when you are busy chasing top-notch researchers and physicians out of MO because of their EVIL stem-cell work…

How is it that the shutdown is now becoming a partisan political issue?

Bill, this may be your biggest gaffe yet.

The bridge at 40 & Lindbergh carried 40 over Lindbergh, not the other way around. Even after the rubble is cleaned up, Big Foot would have problems crossing Lindbergh on 40.

I expect the bridge will be replaced as promptly as possible, but it won’t be anywhere near a couple weeks. It’s possible that the entire rebuilt first half (the part that’s closed now) will reopen by Halloween, which isn’t all that much later than the Aug 28 effective date of legislation in this session (absent an emergency clause).

Bill,

Highway 40 went over Lindbergh, not vice-versa. The bridge that went down WAS US Highway 40/I-64. And it will take a good 2-3 MONTHS to get that bridge built, and that’s with good weather, etc.

my opinion, shouldnt be partisan, hardly a politician lifted any of their three little pinkies to stop it; the more speeches and rhetoric, the less they actually tried to do; congresspeople could have stopped it by pressure on Highway Department, I believe, Republicans are all about money anyhow. Democrats more worried about construction unions than the people. Collectively, not the cahonnes of a gnat.
Just my opinion, of course.

I’ve been wrong before; wasnt sure; thanks for the corrections; but 2-3 months not a year, or forever; thanks for straightening me out my smarter brothers!
