Democratic House nominee yanks leaflets after endorsement denial

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Democratic Missouri House candidate Tom Fann says he stopped distribution of about 1,500 campaign leaflets after St. Peters Mayor Len Pagano complained that they falsely implied that Pagano has endorsed Fann.

“I must emphatically state that I am not endorsing any candidate in that race,” Pagano said in letters to the Post-Dispatch and other publications.

Fann said about 3,000 of the leaflets, which also included  comments from Pagano that the mayor denies saying, already had been dropped off at homes in the 16th District.

Fann, who faces Republican Mark Parkinson in a Feb. 5 special election, blamed his own campaign aides. He said he hadn’t carefully reviewed the wording because he was preoccupied at the time with his daughter’s kidney infection.

“I entrusted some people to put a piece of literature out for me that probably wasn’t 100 percent on the mark,” Fann said. “It probably would have been best worded a little bit differently.”

He also said “I wasn’t trying to make it look like an endorsement. Somebody on my team got a little carried away there.”

Pagano isn’t just included in a long list of politician endorsements - a typical ploy in campaigns. In this case, the mayor is the only person mentioned in the flyer except for Fann and his family. There’s also a picture of Pagano with Fann.

When I initially contacted Fann about Pagano’s disavowal, Fann said the comment attributed with quote marks to Pagano in the flyer was a compilation of the gist of Pagano’s comments at a Dec. 13 Board of Aldermen meeting in St. Peters.

Pagano was responding to Fann’s comments clarifying Fann’s views on the city’s partial funding of health insurance for aldermen. In November, Fann had been on camera in a Channel 2 news story complaining about the aldermanic insurance.

Fann, at the December meeting, said his main point wasn’t to criticize the city but to say that every citizen should have access to affordable health insurance. He also commended city services.

The Fann leaflet makes no reference to the Dec. 13 meeting but quotes Pagano as saying: “Tom Fann, his wife, and his three children have been a vital part of St. Charles County for decades. Fann is right on the issues. It is a shame that families do not have health insurance, and I know that he will do a great job.”

Pagano said he never said that and didn’t give anyone permission to attribute those words to him.

Here’s what Pagano actually said in his response at the meeting to Fann’s remarks, as reproduced on a city-produced DVD of the meeting:

”Truthfully, I know you’re a very good person and a very honest person. And that particular station has a tendency to take this piece and that piece and destroy something that was not meant to be. And your character speaks well, and I do, speaking for the board and everyone, thank you for coming up on that issue. It was something that was really taken out of context and you’re correct, health insurance is a must for all citizens and that should be a priority. So I thank you on that. And also for the benefits of living in the city. And you’re a longtime resident of the city, and you would know.”

Pagano, whose office is elected on a nonpartisan basis, said last week he needs to maintain effective relationships with officials on various governmental levels across party lines and thus wouldn’t endorse anyone for the House.

Moreover, Pagano in 2002 ran (unsuccessfully) for the Republican nomination for St. Charles County assessor - making it unlikely he’d back a Democrat.

Could the letter sent to the newspapers by Pagano have been because of a visit by Kit Bond to Pagano’s office last week. Could the Republicans be a bit worried that Fann’s message and the dissatisfation with the Blunt/Republican leadership could be influencing voters in the 16th to vote for change? Aren’t we hearing over and over that change is what the voters are looking for this year?

Its funny you bring this up because I heard the same thing. I also heard that Parkinson was there also. They came in and bullied the Mayor. They told him that if he didn’t write a letter to disclaim the leaflet , they would make sure and run someone against him in April! They also had to remind him that Bond sits on the FEMA committee in Washinton.
So you would think the press would try to chase the real story here. The sad thing is you will never get Pagano to come out in rage over this situation because he has to deal with FEMA over the Lakeside 370 Project in the weeks to come.
The beauty of the situation is the Republicans are running scared for the first time in a long time in St. Charles County. Parkinson is going to start running T.V. adds on Wed. Why would he have to run T.V. adds in this election?????? I would have to say its because Tom Fann has been working very hard knocking on doors and meeting the people in the District. Oh, and the fact that the polling states that Fann in leading the race by a 2 to 1 margin! This may also explain why all the POLITICAL BULLYING is taking place!

LOL!!!!!!

It looks to me like the television ads are in place to help elect a person who will teach you how to spell ads. Just to let you know, there isn’t a silent “d” in there. You should vote for Parkinson, he’ll help send money to your school and that way you can actually learn how to spell.

Fann leading 2 to 1 in polling? Wow, so the sign war must mean that everyone who has a Parkinson sign must be voting for Fann. Because, correct me if I am wrong, I believe Fann is outnumbered 3 to 1 on HIS OWN STREET!! LOL.

Hey middle of the road, keep sipping your juice over there.

Fann is another Joe Biden….not only does he fake endorsements he don’t have, he puts out campaign literature with wording directly taken off Mark Parkinson’s own literature which has been out for a much longer time……he then promises old people that he will protect their social security and in what way can a state representative do that?????….only federally elected officials can do that….the citizens in this district should elect an individual who actually has a clue about government and how to get things done……not one who will do or say anything to get elected…..vote Parkinson!!

HAHA!!!!
Its funny how you fail to talk about how a U.S. Senator bullied the Mayor of St.Peters. You people must be related to Mark Schlinkmann!
Signs cant vote and you may want to tell Mark he has really angered alot of the citizens by just sticking a sign in there yard without permission. I just so happen to be one of those citizens. After he came by, put a sign in my yard and left a note on the door saying, “thanks for letting me put a sign in your yard”, I threw it away and called the number on Fanns website and put one of his signs in my yard and have been helping him in whatever way I can ever since!!!!!!!!
And the fact that Parkinson needs a U.S. Senator to fight his battles proves to me he dosen’t have any backbone whatsoever. We need a change! Not just another one of the GOOD OL’ BOY POLITICAL CLAN!!!!!!

Do you REALLY think a sitting United States Senator paid a visit to a mayor over such a thing? You’re nuttier than I thought!

It’s been stated before that both Fann and Parkinson asked Pagano for an endorsement, and Pagano told them both that he’d prefer to focus on his own race and not be involved. Unfortunately, Fann couldn’t abide by that.

Parkinson has not only raised twice as much as Fann, but he’s done so with real people. Look at the two disclosure reports, you’ll see that almost 100% of Fann’s funding comes from labor union contributions, not real people.

I’m sure Kit Bond wants his former staffer to do well in the campaign, but there’s no way in hell he “paid a visit” to Pagano over some stupid door hanger.

Interestingly, NONE of this fiasco has convinced Fann that he should take the photograph of himself talking to Pagano down from his website.

What a classy guy!

I also heard that Bond pressured Pagano about this and I am not remotely involved in any of this. How did either of these two get nominated, I remember hearing last October that Ray Stone and Steve Felder would be the nominees from the two parties.

Doesn’t it seem to you that if Bond were to be involved, it would have been for an endorsement in the first place?

Bond hasn’t been in St. Peters for some time. I’m certain that if he walked into anyplace in the St. Louis area, it would have made the news.

Isn’t he in Florida with Giuliani these past couple of weeks?

Anyone who says Bond visited St. Peters for the purpose of bullying the Mayor is smoking an illegal substance.

And for those who were tempted to be fooled into thinking Fann might be a different democrat, just look at this episode. He blamed others including his daughter’s kidney infection for his lie. That’s not a different democrat, that’s the same old democrat.

The reason Fann hasn’t taken the picture off is because he wasn’t sorry he did it. You know, easier to get forgiveness than permission deal.

I would rather vote for a guy who is honest enough to show he has fun, thanks Fann for showing us, than a guy who can’t be honest at all. Pagano probably thinks the same thing now.
