Dropping out: Watch Blunt’s video announcement here
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
So, another slow news day, huh?
Speculation about what, exactly, is driving Gov. Matt Blunt’s decision not to seek re-election — and who will vie for the nomination in his place — seems like it will be the new parlor game in Missouri politics for weeks to come.
It will be an interesting few months in Jefferson City, to say the least.
In the meantime, here is Blunt’s thoroughly modern video statement — straight from YouTube.

Could there be a prosecution in the works?
Darren, how does it help “your” (Dem) cause by poking fun at a man who isn’t even running. You know Bully’s pick on people because of jealosy and insecurity. Don’t count your votes before November. Afterall, now you don’t have our Governor, a strong leader who makes the tough decisions, to pick on (instead of talking about your Dem candidate b/c that’s the Dem way -pick on them with no real solutions)?
Gee, how about he and his wife are tired of getting the hell beat of him by the Post-Dispatch on a weekly basis? Four years of that will tire anyone out regardless of how much you try. It started with Deb Peterson’s trashing of his wife’s outfit on Inauguration Day and ended with the nasty Editorial the day after his State of the State speech last week. He could never please the PD no matter what he did.
Poking fun? It was a serious question.
He didn’t quit the race because he wanted to…something else is up. The man had $4m in the bank and the blessing of his party, however misguided that blessing might have been.
Nobody quits in politics because the press is after them. If you’re a politician, it comes with the turf.
The Post-Dispatch’s treatment of Gov. Blunt has been a disgrace. You are right - it started with Deb Peterson and Mrs. Blunt’s outfit (I thought she looked stunning) and calling the Gov. disrespectfully before he even got started “baby Blunt.”
They have also been grossly disrespectful of Pres. Bush which was since he won in 2000, but got really geared up when on 9-13-01 they printed an editorial comparing his 9-11 actions to President Roosevelt. Fortunately I have dedicated my life since then trying to make their lives at the PD as miserable as I possibly can in return.
It will be interesting to see how they treat Hillary or Obama when they are president in comparison.
Actually, the “disgrace” has been what Blunt has done to the state of Missouri. A lot of the people who bought the party line about gays and guns suddenly didn’t care so much about gays getting married when Blunt stripped their health care and their kids were serving in harm’s way in Iraq.
And you’re whining that the PD doesn’t give Bush “respect”? Respect has to be earned and Bush deserves none. Good Lord, look at what he’s done to our country. If he had any decency he would resign.
This is an odd time for Matty to quit - he has a lot of GOP donations tied up and has left his party in a bit of a bind. Something is coming down the pike….stay tuned….
Hey…Nathan Cooper starts serving time in 2 days. Fired Up! speculates that perhaps he’s feeling cooperative all of a sudden. Matty spent almost $90 grand in Nov and December with Lathop and Gage. That’s a ton of dough to drop with your counselor of record.
I look for Steelman to run for Governor, and who knows who vies for the Treasure spot. I’m hearing some Donnelly rumblings…
This is very interesting. This now paves the way for Steelman to run for Governor, which she was preparing to do, and I hear that Donnelly is going to run for Treasurer. I don’t like the fact that this opens the door to the Governor’s office to Steelman put I would like to see Donnelly as Treasurer.
