Hulshof makes it three for GOP

Republican Kenny Hulshof began his quest for governor today with a statement emphasizing his ethics and conservative values.

“We need a state government that knows its place, does its job well, and then gets out of the way of the American spirit,” he said. “Missourians reject blind partisanship, and they are demanding new ideas and innovative leadership. It will take independence and resolve to end the bitterness that often infects political discourse.”

The one-page statement was released at 10 a.m. Hulshof plans a conference call with reporters later today.

Hulshof, who has represented the 9th Congressional District since 1997, is an attorney and former prosecutor.

While he cited his independence and bipartisanship, Hulshof usually toes the party line in Washington and is considered the favorite of the Missouri Republican Party machinery controlled by U.S. Sen. Christopher “Kit” Bond and Gov. Matt Blunt.

Hulshof’s announcement had been expected. Late yesterday, he put out an advisory saying that he “will make a major announcement tomorrow that will forever change the landscape of Missouri politics.”

Forever seems like a stretch but for now, the landscape has shifted. There will be at least three Republicans vying for the nomination to replace the departing Blunt. Also in the race: Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder and Treasurer Sarah Steelman.

Hulshof is not just an attorney and former prosecutor, he is a crop farmer as well. I would add that his decisions through the years have proven he is independent of Senator Bond and Matt Blunt.

Regardless, he is an outstanding primary and general election candidate. Kinder and Steelman need to clear the field so we can watch Nixon and Carnahan bloody themselves in a Democratic primary.

I love that! “While he cited his independence and bipartisanship, Hulshof usually toes the party line …”

Way to go, Virginia!! You take a guy who is committed to conservative principles, breaks ranks on occasion, and you have to find a way to demonize him in your own little way, anyway!

Kenny will make an incredible candidate for Missouri. Not to take anything away from Kinder or Steelman, his dynamics are just much different.

Carnahan hasn’t announced her candidacy for governor and chances are she wont. The Democratic party is more united and more committed to turning this state back to common decency.
Robin is patient and knows she’ll have her shot……
If you want to see a blood bath, watch the wannabe Republican vultures pick over the bones of chickenspit boy Blunt…..

Hulsof isn’t known on the west side of the state. Most people in Kansas City think Hulsof is a cast member on “Baywatch”.

Garrison - Grow up.

Steven Reed - Your post is SPAM. As much as I like Sarah, this isn’t the place to do electioneering and fundraising, except for Bill Haas, who owes me a cup of coffee.

Regarding the intended topic of this thread … While I would wholeheartedly support Kinder or Steelman were they the nominee, Kenny Hulshof is definitely the man of the hour here. He won the 9th when it was a Democratic district, proving that he goes far beyond the Republican base in his support. An expensive primary, with an uncontested Democrat to face in the general, is a great way to lose an election. I hope Republican leaders can find a way to avoid a rerun of Webster-Blunt-Bailey.

Look at the differences in the two parties…

Here the GOP has three fine, quality candidates… not that you’d know this from reading the Post but still…

On the Democratic side we have Nixon… a man of questionable… well… questionable everything. A man that we were assured would beat Blunt ‘hands down’ (Yes Garrison, I’m talking about you… among others) yet now… now that Blunt isn’t running people in his own party are looking to run against him.

Nixon is weak on policy, weak in popularity, weak in ethics. Any of the three GOP candidates can win against him.

BTW: Jim (post #2) you don’t read the Post much? Virginia was hired to write like that, she has to write like that, and should she not cover the GOP like that, she’ll find herself covering girls swimming meets for the Suburban papers. Nothing new or unusual about it)

I am glad Congressman Hulshof is running for Governor. I believe he should have done it four years ago. I have worked with Congressman Hulshof on many national issues that pertain to the St. Louis area. He has proven time and time again to have a firm grasp of issues and has proven conservative credentials.

I encourage Lt. Governor Kinder and State Treasurer Steelman to continue to run for their current offices and make sure we retain those offices.

Wow! The difference between the republicans, democrats and independents is so glaring in this instance. Both the republicans and democrats leadership do not want a contested primary while independents hope for primaries on both sides. Why? So we can make up our own minds–not have the 2 party’s leadership tell us who to vote for.

OK, let’s really have some fun!

Garrison, your bittnerness is quite pointed. Me thinkest thou hast some axe to grind, no? Or perhaps you know that Hulshof could very well beat Mr. Nixon hands down? Either way, at least we don’t have another Blunt or Carnahan running, at least not yet.

Why do people in politics think their family name entitles them to run for office?

So, who is now going to run for Hulshof’s seat?

In The Know … Nixon has a political name too. Indeed, in light of his conduct over the past six months or so, the name is more appropriate than ever before.

Robb(I) - Why would an independent care about having primaries on both sides? You can only vote in one primary.
