Hulshof makes it three for GOP
Republican Kenny Hulshof began his quest for governor today with a statement emphasizing his ethics and conservative values.
“We need a state government that knows its place, does its job well, and then gets out of the way of the American spirit,” he said. “Missourians reject blind partisanship, and they are demanding new ideas and innovative leadership. It will take independence and resolve to end the bitterness that often infects political discourse.”
The one-page statement was released at 10 a.m. Hulshof plans a conference call with reporters later today.
Hulshof, who has represented the 9th Congressional District since 1997, is an attorney and former prosecutor.
While he cited his independence and bipartisanship, Hulshof usually toes the party line in Washington and is considered the favorite of the Missouri Republican Party machinery controlled by U.S. Sen. Christopher “Kit” Bond and Gov. Matt Blunt.
Hulshof’s announcement had been expected. Late yesterday, he put out an advisory saying that he “will make a major announcement tomorrow that will forever change the landscape of Missouri politics.”
Forever seems like a stretch but for now, the landscape has shifted. There will be at least three Republicans vying for the nomination to replace the departing Blunt. Also in the race: Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder and Treasurer Sarah Steelman.

Hulshof is not just an attorney and former prosecutor, he is a crop farmer as well. I would add that his decisions through the years have proven he is independent of Senator Bond and Matt Blunt.
Regardless, he is an outstanding primary and general election candidate. Kinder and Steelman need to clear the field so we can watch Nixon and Carnahan bloody themselves in a Democratic primary.
