Who knew there were so many Mizzou fans at City Hall?
Room 200 was teeming with Tigers this afternoon who joined Mayor Francis Slay in honoring head football coach Gary Pinkel.
Pinkel received a proclamation and key to the city from Slay; the mayor received a signed football from the coach.
Coach had with him two local players — Carl Gettis, a freshman defensive back from Fort Zumwalt West High, and Bart Coslet, a sophomore lineman from Francis Howell Central.
Vashon grad William Franklin, a stellar senior wide receiver, was scheduled to attend, but, I’m told, had to back out because he is preparing for an upcoming all-star game.
That didn’t keep the crowd away, which included former Vashon basketball coach Floyd Irons, who is awaiting sentencing on federal fraud charges.
Others who came to cheer Pinkel included Alderman Donna Baringer, tax collector Greg F.X. Daly, Comptroller Darlene Green, and city parks czar Gary Bess.
At the end, First Lady Kim Slay came up with the newest member of the mayoral family — Mia, a spry Yorkshire terrier who ran a curl route on the mayor’s carpet.
Coach Pinkel would have been proud.
