Obama holding St. Louis rally next Saturday

The details are still being worked out, but Sen. Barack Obama’s local campaign staff confirmed this afternoon that he’s to be in St. Louis next Saturday for a campaign rally aimed at igniting support for the Feb. 5 primary.

The time and location are still to be worked out, but a spokesman said the aim is to make sure that the site is large enough so that noone gets turned away.

Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo. and a big Obama supporter, made the announcement at a press event Sunday afternoon. She was surrounded by a number of pols, including former Sen. Jean Carnahan and her son, U.S. Rep. Russ Carnahan, former Mayor Vincent C. Schoemehl, state Sen. Minority Leader Maida Coleman, and state Rep. Rodney Hubbard (and too many of his colleagues and former legislators to mention.)

McCaskill, her mother and Jean Carnahan are also featured in a new radio ad for Obama. Click here to listen.

I am a St. Louis transplant living in Macon Georgia. Obama was recently here for a campaign stop and made an unannounced stop at a local church. The notice was by way of mouth and you had to be invited by a church member.
Obama was very inspiring and energized the church to which he basically gave a sermon of his faith and life.
if you can make one of his campaign stops you will walk away impressed and glad you went.

I saw Obama in St Louis last Summer and was very, very impressed. We will be there, and I can only encourage those who have not seen him in person to attend. He is brilliant.

McCaskill says, “Only Barak Obama can bring real change and unite America.” So when Hillary is the nominee, anyone want to place bets on whether she disavows that statement?

Dear Dick, uh, Nick: Claire has made a reasoned choice concerning whom to endorse in the nomination process. Although I support John Edwards, I agree with Claire’s rationale with regards to Hillary. Were Hillary to be the nominee (and I’m increasingly certain she will not be), I would not contribute time or energy to her election, and would indeed find it painful to vote for her come November. Claire sits in the Senate where she needs to rely on her fellow Senators to stand united against the other side of the aisle when necessary, and to work together on legislation that embodies Democrat principles. A number of Senators have made courageous choices of late with their endorsements. Given Claire’s character, background and performance, I seriously can’t imagine an instance where she would backtrack on this position. All the candidates are big boys and girls, and have to respect the choices made by their colleagues, and not be childish or spiteful about them.

There is actually some downside risk for Obama’s appearance in a locality where his success depends in large measure on the success of his “ground game.” Taking his volunteers off the streets the weekend prior to the election to attend a rally could hurt the ground game. The only votes that count are those of people who actually do what is necessary to vote.

On the other hand, the inspirational impact of seeing Obama in person could offset that detriment more than would be the case for other less inspirational candidates. It depends whether undecided voters attend the rally, or if Obama will just be preaching to the choir (albeit a damned big choir).
